Saimaa ringed seals make their nests and give birth to their young in a snow pile on the ice of lake Saimaa, in February and March. Winters are increasingly uncertain in terms of snow conditions, so the seals are helped to secure their nesting sites by shoveling man-made snowdrifts. Conservation efforts for Saimaa ringed seals are coordinated by Metsähallitus (the Finnish Forest Administration).
At the end of January, a team of six people from Korkeasaari Zoo also joined the snow-shoveling work. Together with Metsähallitus experts, the Korkeasaari employees spent a whole day on the ice of lake Saimaa, making five man-made snowdrifts for the seals that are located on a nature reserve.
