Welcome to Race Day at the Grassroots 2021 Kosciuszko Killer!
After having a coolant fitting fail during the prologue I was on the hunt for a spare fitting, with no parts store within 100km. Lots of fellow riders offered their help, offered parts off their own bikes as well as scouring the pit paddock for anything that we could MacGyver onto my bike - everyone was trying to help so that I could ride in the race. Neil from Sydney Sherco came to the rescue by pilfering a T-piece off a new bike from their display stand. Bloody legend - you saved my weekend mate!
The track proved to be full of interesting challenges and definitely stood up to the high standards that Grassroots have set in the last couple of years. Lots of logs and rocks, off camber trails, flowy single and some pretty big hills too! I really struggled on the big hills and managed to burn myself out early on, and when I started cramping up I decided to finish my lap and pull the pin. It was an absolute blast all the same, and I got to see some impressive skills (and crashes) out on the track.
I stepped away from my usual Shinko Cheater and ran a Mitas single green stripe on the rear for this race. It held up really well and provided loads of grip - a big thankyou to my friends that provided this tyre (you know who you are!).
Also a big shout out to Brad from Carpathian Adventures for supplying freshly brewed espresso at the snap of a finger. An enduro God in his own right, yet humble enough to keep a hack like me juiced up on caffeine!
