It is worth noting that charisma works differently in kotor 1 and kotor 2. In K1 both CHA and WIS increase your force powers difficulty class as well as increase your total force points. In K2 CHA doesn't increase your total force points, but instead reduces the cost of force powers of opposing alignment.

Earlier this year I finally got The Dark Soul achievement. It took me a few playthroughs (only really played KOTOR 1) and looking at the combat log to find out there's a couple more hidden modifiers for to-hit rolls that can apply too. A melee attacker vs. an opponent with a ranged weapon will get +10 on their to hit roll. There's also a close range bonus for ranged attackers (vs. any target), which is also +10 to hit. The KOTOR 1 tutorial sorta hints that ranged weapons are at a disadvantage vs melee attackers, but doesn't tell you about the close range bonus at all. In the case of a melee person right next to a ranged person and they're just standing slugging it out, they're both getting +10 on their attacks and will hit very often. But melee attacks usually do significantly more damage, so will tend to win in that situation. Knowing about the close range bonus makes ranged people way more effective if you position them well (especially Mission, with her sneak attacks). I forget exactly how far is considered close range, but it makes a huge difference!

You are actually a god. I’m new to RPGs and the rolls and modifiers and everything else confused me so much when I play KOTOR. This was an actually amazing video I only have one question left: some of my weapons have 2d6 or 1d6 rolls and I was wondering how that works. Does 1d6 mean that it’s rolls a six sided die once when doing calculations and 2d6 means it is rolled twice and added together? Or am I totally wrong?
@GamingYourOwnWay
4 жыл бұрын
Correct, in that notation that is what that means. KOTOR doesn't use that notation, they say 1-12 or 2-12 for example just to show you the damage range. And while knowing the damage range is important, it's important to know how those are different. 1-12 means that the game rolls one 12-sided die, but 2-12 means it rolls two 6-sided dice, the difference meaning it's harder to hit the extremes with the 2-12 scenario, but more likely to deal damage somewhere in the middle, whereas on 1-12 you're equally likely to score a 1 as you are a 12. Probably too much info haha, sorry :)

This is supposed to be one of the greatest Star Wars games of all. Back then, with my 2 tries, I couldn't get into it. Now, since I'm seeing it in first rank of best Star Wars games and story videos and even friends talking nostalgic about their first playthrough, I figured I have to give it another and earnest try. I always avoided such kind of games, cuz it makes me feel the game is playing me, instead I am playing the game, it has such a chess character for me. But anyway, I got myself in the right mood, I was really eager playing it for good this time, I kinda got hooked even within the first 3 hours...but now...my anxiety is stagnating rapidly. There are so many things I cannot understand. For example, why do my teammates always (auto)attack with the normal hit while I've unlocked way better skills. Is there a higher chance to hit? Does it drain less of whatever? When I manually set other attacks they are way more effective. Man, I really wanna dig into it but seemingly I just don't get this (kind of) game(s) :( Hopefully your guide will help me Lone_Gunmen, you are my last hope :P

so, i made it past the rancor, had to look it up on youtube though. finally in that vulkar base. i already found 2 of that mentioned passes from the special guards. but the 2 doors i need to get through keep telling me there is a pass card needed. so i try if i can equip it in my hand. no i can't. MAN!!!! that game is killing me. i'm very close to leave it be. it makes no sense to me. there are several other things. like i repaired one of these droids, it says it it now functional and will attack. but it doesn't even move! how is that functional? geez, i rather play Jedi Knight again...

Sorry to hear you're not enjoying it! Some games just aren't for anyone! It's an older kind of game where they don't spell everything out in a super straightforward way and they leave you clues in game to help you. Like for the rancor, you should pick up a Bek Datapad that tells you to use the scent to get the rancor to eat something lethal. As for your pass issue, you can't equip datapads/passes, once you pick up the pass, there should be a dialogue option at the terminal to use it.

@@GamingYourOwnWay yeah i supose this game is not made for me :( i have a playtime of 14 hours now, made it past the ruins, and i still don't like the combat or the skilling, there are so many odd things. actually i like games from this time, i'm excusing a lot of technical issues, but there is so much more i can't cope with. i thought as it progrresses it would change my mind, as soooo many people played and loved it, i figured not any of these guys can be a D&D lover. I may be the only person in the whole galaxy dislking this game^^ but at least i tried (:

How does damage work sorry if you talked about it but I can't find it if you did : / edit: could you also tell me whether damage type does anything
@GamingYourOwnWay
4 жыл бұрын
No worries my man, I cover how damage works pretty extensively in this video: kzitem.info/news/bejne/xoKisntonXxnfZw. If you still have any questions feel free to reach out of course! Damage types like sonic, cold, heat, are literally just the type of damage you're dealing. Some weapons deal like normal damage and sonic (for example) damage, so you get two damage rolls on an attack, but other than that, that's about it, it's just the type of damage being done. It's because some types of armor and gear offer resistance to certain types of damage, and some types of characters are vulnerable to certain types of damage (ion and droids are the first that come to mind). Does that help?
@GamingYourOwnWay
4 жыл бұрын
Damage types aren't usually something I concern myself with a whole lot in KOTOR, it's probably nice to be familiar with ion and disruptor (ion is strong against droids and disruptor deals true damage (can't be resisted/reduced). But if you played something like DnD, like every attack deals a certain type of damage, and some species are weak to certain types of damage and have to save with disadvantage or have something else unique happen to them. Sorry if I'm rambling haha

We need a remaster (or should I be using the term remake? IDK) and, more importantly, an AI overhaul. Your two companions always seem to use default attacks (I know they can have scripts assigned but it doesn't seem to be enough for me. They usually use default attacks and not feats, I need confirmation though as I'm still new to this game) and they're aggro range is just... too high? They seem to run off to fight all the time.
@GamingYourOwnWay

Yeah, in kotor 1 it definitely doesn't seem like they use feats often, I can't remember if they use feats more often as the feats hit higher tiers, but they definitely do in KOTOR 2. My only guess as to why is because of the penalty you suffer from the tier one attack feats, but it could also just be bad AI haha. And yeah, it's hard to get them to retreat for sure

Also, from what I gathered from this video it seems real time combat is only an illusion. Is it? BTW, I appreciate the fast reply. A surprise, to be sure, but a welcome one.

It's kind of hybrid combat, if it were 1 on 1 then it would be turn based, but when you have more than two people in a fight, there's not like initiative and turn order, but it's also not real-time combat

I don't use any mods for KOTOR, but for KOTOR 2 I have the following: TSLRCM, ebon hawk re-texture interior only, widescreen UI (stretch fix), fixed lightsaber colors, effixian's zeison sha/jal shey reskins 2010, visas HD re-skin, TSL backdrop improvements. You might also check out catdaddy gaming's channel, I think he uses quite a few mods.

I hate to be an elitist kind of guy but I feel like Kotor is naturally just a pretty easy game to pick up and learn the mechanics, versus a game like one of the og fallouts or Morrowind lol. I look at this and would think everything mechanics wise learned in this rpg translates fairly easily to most other RPGs

The combat is unique, it's very different from your typical RPG where you hack and slash. The combat is turn based and inspired by D20 mechanics (what's used in DnD). I won't lie, it's not for everyone. If you've never played or aren't sure about buying it, you can check out any of my let's play episodes of KOTOR 1 or 2 to kind of see what the combat looks like.

I want to focus on melee weapons in KOTOR 1, should I prioritize constitution over dexterity since the defense roll is 10 vs an attack roll of 20?
@GamingYourOwnWay
3 жыл бұрын
I would say don't just go all in on one and leave the other at 8 or 10, buy I'd be tempted to put more points into constitution than dex, only because bosses really don't miss that often regardless, so I'd rather have the extra health than higher defense. That's just me though!
