Bit of history here. This song, Paranoid, was actually written in the studio in about as much time as it takes to play because they needed a three minute song to fill in the remaining space on the album they were working on, which was to be called War Pigs. Guitarist Tony Iommi wrote the riff pretty much on the spot and bassist Geezer Butler wrote some lyrics for Ozzy which actually describe depression, but he didn't know the correct word so he picked paranoid because he thought it sounded cool. The record producer decided that Paranoid was a more radio-friendly song than War Pigs so they made it the first single and the title track of the album. However, they did not change the cover art of a man wearing an oversize police helmet holding a sword and shield, which doesn't have anything to do with being paranoid. As far as expecting their music to be "edgy or heavy", they wrote a good mix of songs. Many were extremely dark and doomy, some were poppy, some were pretty instrumental pieces and some were psychedelic blues. On this album you had "War Pigs" (a song about war-mongering politicians), "Iron Man", "Electric Funeral" (about nuclear war), and "Hand of Doom" (about heroin addiction and overdose) but also "Planet Caravan" (a dreamy psychedelic piece about space travel), the instrumental freak-out "Rat Salad" and "Fairies Wear Boots" (composed after some skinheads called Ozzy a fairy because of his long hair, while he was tripping on LSD).

Later when Ozzy was doing his music post-Sabbath, he auditioned Buckethead to be his guitarist... the funny thing was that Buckethead turned out to be too weird even for Ozzy: "I tried out that Buckethead guy. I met with him and asked him to work with me but only if he got rid of the fucking bucket. So I came back a bit later and he's wearing this green fucking Martian's-hat thing. I said, 'Look, just be yourself!' He told me his name was Brian, so I said that's what I'd call him. He says, 'No one calls me Brian except my mother.' So I said, 'Pretend I'm your mum then!' I haven't even got out of the room and I'm already playing fucking mind games with the guy. What happens if one day he's gone and there's a note saying, 'I've been beamed up?' [Laughs] Don't get me wrong, he's a great player. He plays like a motherfucker!" -- Ozzy, 2005

Check out the Master Of Reality if you want to just how heavy they could be. Vol 4 is amazing, so is Sabbath Bloody Sabbath and Heaven and Hell is just a masterpiece from The opening Neon Knights to the final notes of Lonely Is The Word. Just saw your reaction to Jethro Tull, you mentioned there was a lot of transitions. Check out prog rock bands in general and you'll find music that is arranged almost like a symphony in that the songs have acts and movements. Opeth - Ghosts of Perdition, Tool - Pneuma, Dream Theater - Pull Me Under or Rush - Tom Sawyer. Some of this stuff just leaves you breathless at the end and wondering what sort of trippy journey you've just been on.
