The tour of Kröv begins at the town hall. The area of the “Cröver Empire” is depicted on the gable wall. Kröv was first mentioned in 752 AD in a deed of donation to the Echternach monastery. At this time, former Roman domains fell to the Frankish king, creating the “Cröver Empire”.
A really nice place in Kröv is the one at the Europa Fountain. This fountain was created in 1974 and shows Europe with the bull. Since 1953, an international costume meeting on the Moselle has been celebrated every year in Kröv. This shows that Kröv has a very special relationship with Europe. This festival always takes place on the first weekend in July. Then there is a big wine festival and there is a big stage that floats on the Moselle.
On Robert-Schumann-Straße you will find interesting buildings, for example the Jesuitenhof. It was built in the 18th century for Jesuits in Trier, and there is still a house altar inside today.
A little further you come to the Staffelter Hof. The winery located here is documented to have existed since 862, making it the oldest company still in existence today in Germany and one of the oldest in the world. Today's farm complex from the 18th century stands on an old Roman settlement site.
From Kröv you can see the ruins of the Church of Our Lady or the Wolfer Monastery, which sits directly on the mountain ridge that separates Kröv from Traben-Tarbach. The former Cröver Empire existed with its own rights and privileges until the French Revolution. Until 1814, Kröv belonged to the Département de la Sarre in France and later to Prussia after Napoleon's final defeat.
The former Nazi Reich Youth leader and convicted war criminal Baldur von Schirach spent the last years of his life after his release from prison in Kröv, where he was also buried. His grave has since been leveled.
The town's most important industry is viticulture. The cultivation takes place largely on steep slopes. Riesling is mainly grown here. The main location of the vineyards is the Kröver Naked Ass. The name is a corruption of the Celtic “Nackas”. It means “rocky height” and goes back to the fact that in autumn the slope looks “naked” without leaves.
Anyone who arrives at the Weinbrunnenhalle will find themselves at the central event location in Kröv and one of the largest in the Middle Moselle. Concerts, conferences or other events can take place here. There is space for up to 1,500 people.
There is an impressive wrought iron railing in the entrance area of the wine fountain hall. On this railing you can trace the viticulture throughout all seasons according to its origins. Typical seasonal works from spring, summer, autumn and winter are presented. At the end there is the enjoyment of the wine.
If you start the marketing year by cutting back the vines generously in order to accelerate their growth next summer, you will also see the soil loosened up in order to be able to supply it with sufficient oxygen and nutrients.
The fully grown grapes are then harvested in autumn and collected in large baskets on the backs of the winemakers and their helpers, carried to large tractors and then driven to the winery. There the grapes are then pressed in the wine cellar. The juice is then stored in barrels where it matures into the famous Mosel wine. Now it has to be kept nice and cool and can then be enjoyed with your loved ones. For the benefit!
