Like many say, this is a mixture of the vibes from Computer World and Electric Cafe. It lacks the warmth of the former (especially the analogue melody line) and the sheen/production of the latter... Shame they couldn't quite nail it but maybe I could imagine a remixer like Kevorkian could have worked his magic on this in 1983 and along with Tour De France and others could have made for a nice album. I kinda prefer this vibe to the Electric Cafe sound with it's DX7 strings.

At the time, what was conceived under the working title of "Techno Pop", definitely needed to develop... This demo sure has its charms ("Sex Object" always seemed like a darker sister track to "The Model") - the idea was there but they audibly felt stuck with it and for that, this demo sounds forced. "Techno Pop" the album would have sounded hopelessly dated and half-baked had they kept this kind of vibe. It sadly caused friction within the band due to a long term hiatus between "Tour De France" and the next one, but the final outcome that was "Electric Cafe", remains a masterpiece in its own right, and by all means it was a smart move (even the choice of title regardless of how baffling, "Electric Cafe" sounded more in place). There may have not been a common theme with it like with many of its successful predecessors, but for the year 1986, Kraftwerk still delivered an album that sounded like nothing else, despite they sure looked up to the contemporaries caught up in the same technology wave (Jarre, Telex, The Art Of Noise, Depeche Mode, Laurie Anderson or Scritti Politti to name a few).

No, they never used the Digital Drums. The drums sounds are custom made analog sounds. The bass is an Emulator 1 factory sound. The DX7 and TX816 were used later in the process of the album. A Sequential Drumtraks loaded with Linn LM1 EPROMs along with a few of their own drum sounds was used on the 1986 versions of Techno Pop.

@MrChromed
