I might get some flak for this, but I've always hated the nation of Krakoa from its inception. Xavier's dream was essentially MLK's was, for everyone to be judged by their character, not anything outside of their control. Krakoa was, in my eyes, giving up. Does it make sense? Yeah, sure, but it always rubbed me the wrong way since it presented characters like Apocalypse and Sinister in a (very minimally) positive light. Not only that, but these characters (most heroes in Marvel for that matter) are supposed to be lessons in morality, having the X-Men essentially give up on _the_ dream and segregate themselves from everyone else presents a _bad_ message.

The whole Krakoa age began as X-men kind of wrote themselves into a corner. One of the books I was reading had a ragtag group of Xmen led by a Cyclops who had been shot through an eye by Hope and the team was basically removing (killing) off threats to mutants, but there was no discernable direction for them and meanwhile another group of Xmen had just returned from another dimension and then poof! I agree. Krakoa could have developed in a mind-blowing concept over time. It should have lasted at least ten years. But the writers (ALWAYS the writers) were too lazy to really develop Hickman's brilliant ideas further. There was absolutely no need to destroy everything so soon. But things are what they are, 20 years ago we had an absolutely BRILLIAN Morrison run where he showed what ADULT X-Men stories looked like. The X-Men were suddenly talking and acting like real flesh and blood people. Three years later Marve decided it was time to go "back to the basics", without a single book in the franchise retaining that awesome adult atmosphere crafted by Morrison. Krakoa was exactly the same thing- a highly complex and well thought out concept which actually brought the X-Men one step further, and suddenly, just like in 2004, we are "back to the basics"- ie, let's pretend we never left the 90s. It's a big downgrade, a step down. But let's celebrate.

@megatoke a video designed to precis Krakoa should not be going off on a tangent over another, decades old storyline, even if they do have the same name. It sounds like you're expecting the narrator to be an old farmer, staring out over the Yorkshire Dales with his flatcap pulled low and thumbs jammed into his waistcoat pockets, proclaiming "In my day, we had proper Inferno. None of this modern rubbish. Resurrection protocols? Luxury! When I were a nipper, we had to either wait for Apocalypse to bring you back or return as clone from another dimension"
@JulioConnory
3 ай бұрын
I'd argue Krakoa was a resounding success. The X-Men were not cool prior to Krakoa for a long time, over a decade. 2010's were the last X-Men run anyone cared about. Krakoa changed that. The Krakoan era got a ton of old readers like myself at least reading some new material. It brought in some new fans too, hard to say if that meant much. Fully agree they shit the ending. They SHOULD have dragged Krakoa and resurrection out for a decade. Even if papa Feige demanded the classic X-Men go back to Greymalkin and play school. Leave the rest of it all going on, and riff on it all. Hickman beat "Jean Grey died again". He set up almost every villain for an actually NEW and interesting arc, of which basically only Sinister was run with. Marvel, run by a bunch of woke ideologs, did what woke ideologs always do: failed to read the room, overplayed their winning hand until it lost, shit the bed, blamed everyone but themselves, and eventually rolled over in complete defeat. But I can't call the era on the whole a failure. The 10 years of X-Men comics prior were a failure. Hell the gap between say Onslaught/Operation Zero Tolerance all the way to E is for Extinction--THAT was a failure (with a few minor exception arcs). Krakoa, despite having serious lows, also had serious highs.
@christopherbennett5858
2 ай бұрын
I’d agree with that. With the majority of it, I’d say that there was something good in it for everyone. In terms of characters that really improved from this era, I’d say Emma, Maddie Pryor, Alex Summers, Nekra, the Externals, Karma, Kwannon and Kate Pryde had some of the best stories.

You titled the video “X-men’s biggest failure” but I think you kinda left out the reasons it might have failed naturally over time? You didn’t really mention a single foible or reason that caused its downfall. It was just kind of a summary of how it ended.

Having read the Krakoan era in almost it's entirety I gotta say, this was not it. The finer details are what matters in this case so by leaving out the sins of sinister and more importantly Judgment Day you are rushing to the conclusion. The first age of the Krakoan era ended on a solid note for the mutants even though the XMen could not experience it completely. Lastly, you don't explain why this is the XMens biggest failure so your title is a little clickbaity.. I think the concept of summaries for larger stories is a good one. Not going to lie - Stupidly confusing storyarc, stupidly long and yet another reason why people walked away from comics. Marvel (mainly) and DC have forgotten the foundation of comics. Going back to the first DC comic...it's literally title. FUN. I get some some stories like this one. IDK, make it a 3 part hardcover story? BUT for the main comics of both companies should be that anyone should be able to pick up a comic and have an idea of what is happening, even if it is the first issue someone is reading. Comics lost their FUN when McFarlane, Larson, Lee, and Liefeld took it too far. Sure the industry had problems before that...but they pushed it over the line and then after planting the worst seeds at Marvel and Dc, they went off to create Image, which for all intents and purposes was the beginning of the end of anything fun in comics. There is a reason Spider-man's costume stayed the same for years, so much so that when they did do a change in the 80s, there was so much protest it went right back to the red and blue...and venom was slowly born from that fan hate. ( I lived and read through that in real time - they tried to hype up the new costume to no avail) Where I was heading with that...Comics should be fun, like a slow drawn out Soap Opera that anyone can pick up an issue and enjoy instead of being confused. Story Arcs like Krakoa and all the other "world ending" events have killed what the mass of people enjoyed. They used to sell 100,000 on some of the worst selling comics in the 80s. (before multiple covers, holo covers, etc etc etc.) Now they are actually lucky if a comic sells 100K copies. There used to be well over 4000 comic stores, now they are on the point of death at 1500ish. X-Men's biggest failure would be many things but the first one would be forgetting to have fun along the way

As a new X-men fan trying to get into comics, one of the biggest reasons I just won’t get into Krakoa comics is that it’s just to complicated. It’s so much and all of it is so seriously interwoven it’s impossible to keep track. Not to also mention I don’t like the idea of the X-men giving up in the dream of coexistence, which is literally their whole purpose, though I can understand older comic fans wanting a change of pace, but personally I do not like it since Krakoa as a separatist ethnostate is the opposite of what the X-men should want. But hey, that’s just my perspective as a new fan.

A separatist ethnostate is what Magneto wanted. Xavier ironically ended up pursuing Magneto's dream instead of his own in this arc.

Because Jonathan Hickman left. That's why it was a disappointment. Most writers in Marvel are just normies. They can't create universe-level comic series like Hickman does. And that's the fact. Just look at his career. The Fantastic Four, Future Fondation, Avengers Time Runs Out, Secret Wars. And then House of X and now Ultimate Universe. He's bright!

I watched 47, FORTY-SEVEN, videos just for this type of ending? How the hell did exodus and the 250,000 mutants get out of the white hot room? Why werent they there for the big battle? How the hell did Charles end up in prison? What about Dominion? Wasnt Apocalypse bringing the forces from Mars to help? Is Tony and Emma atill married?

There are people online who have made chronological reading lists for all of the Krakoa era. A simplified list? HoX/PoX X-Men (Jonathan Hickman) X of Swords Hellfire Gala (2021) Inferno X Lives/Deaths of Wolverine X-Men (Gerry Duggan) Immortal X-Men X-Men Red Judgment Day event Sins of Sinister crossover Hellfire Gala (2023) Fall/Rise of House of X X-Men Forever That's the general "core" of the storyline. Other titles like Hellions was a lot of fun and Excalibur dealt with Apocalypse a lot but it might not be considered "essential" since the most important stuff is in X of Swords. Again, though, if you want the "full" experience, then you can Google chronological reading orders. And, while your mileage may vary. I recommend skipping Fallen Angels, Children of the Atom, and X-Corp. None of them really add anything and are actually borderline terrible.

Rob, with all due respect, video is fine but you did not mention the point *WHYYYY?* was the Karkoka arc "The X-men's biggest failure." And *WHAT* do you mean by that? Is it the failure as a comic books series? Or a failure as the X-men team to preserve peace between mutants and humans?
@obihan_shinobi

I feel like Moira's power was just that. A power, not an ability. Ability implies that you are able to use it or it was able to happen (or not). Her power was that of "cause and affect" and not something she was "able" to do but may or may not always happen or be chosen.

I never really liked the Krakoa story arc for the X-Men, they went from "we're people too even if we have powers" to "We're better than you because we have powers... also, free resurrections only for us!"
