Both sounded great, if you didn't know the Tonezone was Larry's pickup design for the EBMM EVH model. Eddie chose another pickup so Larry released it as the TZ. I have it in multiple guitars and love it, of course I also love the Wolfgang pickups as well though... just different as many have noted.

Ok, I listened through a speaker and not my crappy phone, but even with that on KZitem I don't think you get true sound. It COULD sound totally different in person but over KZitem, I think the difference is so small that most people would say they can't tell a difference. Now I'm a guitar player so I know how we can be. I'm glad you mentioned the radius and the playability though because to me that's just as important as the sound. I went from a 10 - 16 compound radius to a 14 only on my new pacer vintage, the classic has a 12 and I don't know why they just didn't make them the same, and it took some getting used to especially the narrower neck. I've always been a DiMarzio fan, so I love the tone zone. Speaking of which, if you really wanted a totally even comparison, I would of used the same pickup, although with the body woods and as I mentioned , KZitem, the difference still may have not been that noticable. Anyway, great playing, wish I could do some of that Van Halen stuff. Lol next you need to do a black and yellow! :)

Thx for the good feedback. I put a video up with the Kramer now with an Evh pickup. It’s brighter than the Dimarzio. kzitem.info/news/bejne/pIx3uGitqJ98iII However as you mentioned, in the room or onstage is the true gtr tone. The Kramer has more bottom and strat-ish mids no matter what pup is in it and simply is fun 80s shred gtr. EVH have their own thing and more tempered high end with some lows but in the similar frequency as the Kramer, ultimately a different animal. The rest Is the player and chops. Thanks🎸😀

There are players making great music with cheap Floyd’s and Original German Floyd’s. Same with original Marshall amps. They threw a transformer in the block and what you got was these big hunks of metal that were inconsistent sounding form amp to amp. (Chronicled in a Guitar player interview with Jim Marshall and Yngwie years back) Put your own brass block in your Floyd’s and the rest of the tones is in your hands. 🎸

Doesn't the Kramer have a more narrow nut width? I got rid of my EVH striped series because the neck was too wide for my liking. I have a Wolfgang and it has a completely different (narrow) neck.
@BrevSullivan
2 жыл бұрын
That difference is so negligible though. Speculating here on what your experiencing since I’ve played and still own them all and have reacted similarly ….. The Evh neck is way flatter than the Kramer so would feel wider with it’s compound 12-16 radius. Kramer neck is just straight 12.” and feels narrow. Wolfgang is the same as the Evh -12” to 16 but it doesn’t sit in the hands the same as the Evh stripe series that feel more like Charvels. I’m more partial to grabbing the Wolfgang as an everyday guitar, for any musical situation.

I agree with you. I have both the EVH 5150 Special in Tobacco Sunburst and a Kramer Pacer Classic. There is quite a bit of difference in the price with the EVH coming in at about $1100 all in (shipping, etc.) and the Kramer I picked up locally for $400. The Kramer is VERY HEAVY as it weights considerably more than the basswood EVH. If I dropped the Kramer I would NOT worry about it as it is REALLY PUT TOGETHER (and it costs 1/3 as much!!!! ) Both the Kramer and EVH both have the stock pickups still installed. Sound wise, I really like both guitars but I think mine are a little more different than your two guitars (as you have The 84 which cost about twice as much as the Pacer Classic). The stock pickups on the Kramer SHRED. It is definitely a Kramer copy of a JB, or something in that range. It is ALL 80's hard rock sounding, which I LOVE. On the other hand, the EVH definitely has more low end grunt to it and can be used in a lot more types of music and still sound at home and awesome. Both tones can be changed dramatically with any type of pedal, computer program, amp, etc. But bare bones, I would describe the Kramer as really an 80's sounding guitar and the EVH more well rounded, not quite as hard rock sounding, but still effective in all types of songs. I would give playability to the EVH hands down. The neck is amazing and the build quality is superb. The EVH Floyd Rose trem is a mile better than the Floyd copy on the Kramer Classic. I am NOT NEARLY as good of a player as your are but for anyone reading this I would say if you are really wanting the 80's hard rock sound, consider the Kramer as the build quality is great and the tone is great (Think VH, RATT, Bon Jovi, Skid Row, White Lion, Mr. Big). If you a die hard VH fan (like I am) go ahead and get the EVH as you will NOT be disappointed. The build quality and sound quality are both great. With the EVH you can play ANYTHING with it. Or better yet, get BOTH of these guitars, as both are great sounding guitars that will give you hours of enjoyment like I did!!!

I own both, and I like the neck better on the Kramer, but the Floyd Rose and the pickup are better on the EVH. Especially the tremolo. The one on the Kramer feels cheap and loose. When I bought mine, they were the same price ($799). That is not true today. Fender really jacked the price up of the Striped. I've seen them going for as high as $1900. What he said about the weight is very true. The Kramer feels much heavier. I guess than be a plus or minus, based on your taste. I think the EVH feels better, but again, that is a personal preference.

Nice demo, I really like the TZ in my old ibanez RG. Really fat squawky mids. Love my 87 Baretta II, I have a duncan 59 in it and its great. You guys should check out Pete Thorns recent EVH pickup video... very thorough and of course petes playing is out of this world.

EVH wins from the first chord, at list to me. I mean, the guy actively worked on tone for 40 years. Hard to do better than his most recent equipment.

Where can I get BOTH The Kramer (1984) Hot For Teacher Eddie Van Halen Striped Guitar and the Kramer 5150 model??? Well guitar kits that don’t need ANY sanding or fret work done to them out of the box??? Ones You can take directly out of the box and start painting and striping????

Do both guitars have fresh strings or when did you change out the strings on both guitars? And pickup volume pull knobs up or down? Which one is tuned better?
@BrevSullivan

Change strings every week. These EVH don’t have push pull. Tuning..? Identical.

So you like the neck on the evh better?
@BrevSullivan
2 жыл бұрын
@@daved5343 it’s easier to access high notes on the EVH neck with its compound 12- 16”, but if your more into a modern strat feel, C neck 12” radius the Kramer feels great. Hard to decide, both deliver.

Both are good, but the 5150 has a smoother, fatter midrange, and cleans up better. Purely IMHO and all that.

I have a Kramer 84 and the Seymour Duncan pickup sucks. It's very muddy and breaks up early. So it has very little treble. My Pro Mod Charvel sounds great. I'm going to put a Dimarzio in mine because yours sounds great. I have Bose computer speakers so I can hear the low end chunkiness your Kramer has.

Great demo. They are so close in tone. The Kramer seems to have a slight bit more high end and the EVH has a bit more low end. So close...I can't really pick one above the other. If given the choice I'd probably take the EVH because of he compound radius neck. Peace.

The first thing that made me like Eddie's guitar was the banana headstock. I have them both and although the EVH is a little better made, I like the 84 just for the headstock.

5150 has a more accurate 14.9ohm pickup. The mids are boosted a bit in it compared to the Kramer. I still like Kramer (now owned by the same company that owns Gibson) over Fender, but only because Fender went the route Gibson did 30+ years ago and began pricing guitarists out of the ability to own any real product they produce without serious debt. There isn't a Gibson (made today) worth $1k or better, nor is there a Fender worth the money. Both companies should be putting the same care into every model they do the models that cost $1k or better. Instead, they decided that the models less than $1k aren't worth anything other than basic "it works". I'd rather pay a good guitar tech some well earned cash to setup and bring out the capabilities of the guitar versus an extra $4-500 more for the same "care" both companies decided to charge a premium for.

I think the Kramer 84 sounded muted/muddy and needs a slight bump in the midrange with eq, the EVH sounded how I would expect an “Eddie” guitar to sound. Great video! Thanks

They sound good but too fat compared to the original track. There’s a brighter less distorted or clean distortion with a twangyness to Ed’s sound .

Lol nowhere does it claim in this video: ‘This is EDDIES tone’ . It’s a comparison between 2 gtrs straight to an amp. And if everyones rig has to have more treble for you to approve the official Vh tone to buy these gtrs we’re in trouble. Cheers.

The EVH matched the harmonics better with a deeper more accurate Timbre. Very obvious. But that's not saying the Kramer The 84 isn't a great metal guitar. There's one in a local pawn shop for $500.

Killer playing and demo! Gotta figure basswood vs alder, Tone Zone vs. EVH Wolfgang (or whatever) = different tones. The Kramer 84 needs a brighter pickup to match the EVH Frankie. Either way, great tone from both! I thought I read Ed took his Explorer neck and non-Kramer body, and slapped a Kramer logo on the 5150, for contract purposes?

Yes unchained has a flanger etc. but anyone knows from an engineering standpoint when u are doing a tone test choosing a gtr , effects and artifacts are masking the purity of tone. Thank for watching.
