It revolves on overpaying for the activation of the Chromatic Sphere/Star. Since you sacrifice the junk to generate mana to overpay for the cost, said junk is in the graveyard to be legal targets before the targets for Myr Retriever et al have been assigned.

I think the thing that makes it confusing is that the tricky part is avoiding a problem of which the existence is not obvious. Basically you sacrifice stuff and then bring it back and sacrifice it again. The tricky part is that the way you get it back is triggered abilities of the stuff you are sacrificing. And in order for it to work, that stuff already has to be in the graveyard so you can target it. The trick is that you can sacrifice stuff without using the stack if you are using a mana ability to pay for another ability. So all of the stuff that you sac to the ironworks dies at the same time without using the stack. So when the death abilities trigger, you can target all the stuff and get it back.

When Fifth Dawn released a built a Mirrodin block fun deck around KCI and I swear these decks are needlessly convoluted. Using just Mirrodin block cards, all you need is the KCI, 2 Myr Retrievers, and Disciple of the Vault for infinite life loss. Add a Leonin Elder and you have infinite life gain.

matt nass's KCI decks has to be one of the most flavorful in terms of its design. it's a bunch of interchangeable and interconnected pieces working together to do something that none of the cards can do by themselves, as an artifact deck should.

I used to enjoy watching combo's go off. Then one time, after a tournament, I was watching two guys play. I got there right as the combo went off. I fprget what pieces were on the board or what exactly it did. But his combo went on for like 15min. The other guy let him play it out, and when it ended, the guy was like... so... I'm dead? And the other guy said something along the lines of 'No, I was going to lose and I just wanted to waste your time.' And then scooped. Ever since, I don't want to scoop when I see a combo start. Now I hate combo's lol

Care to explain how it being slightly slower fixes the tournament issues and the complexity issue?
@Dracapane
2 жыл бұрын
@@vivecanada1 By being a fringe deck that only people absolutely dedicated to it will play, and doesn't show as often at tournaments as the top tier version of the deck. Also if long combo chains without determinative outcomes are that much of a tournament ruining problem, then Yawgmoth combo and especially Glimpse of Tomorrow would also be an issue. Also the deck runs into repeatable loops very often, if you've got KCI, scrap trawler, myr retriever, and star (plus a 0) you can just show it once and then say repeat 25-30 times until I have my library in hand, and then repeat 10 times with spell bomb.

@@Dracapane Whether or not the card sees widespread play is like, the last thing they look at when it comes to banning cards like this (see: Shahrazad)
@vivecanada1
2 жыл бұрын
@@Dracapane it's determinative. The issues are more that going through the mana loops before doing the draw loops take a lot of time. Like with eggs, the turns can take long enough that tournament end times are affected. The other issue Nizzahon mentioned was that mtgo won't let you overpay at the time you want to do so and by doing so will not let the loops work. If even 5 skilled players with the deck show up to a modern ptq or protour, that could add almost 15 minutes per round and numerous judge calls. Do you want to be the one to explain why a 8 round modern day went 2 hours over time?

@NizzahonMagic

Yes, mostly because of the arcane rules knowledge involved.
@Omenshaper

Four Horsemen is only mathematically complicated, the execution of the combo is pretty easy. KCI requires intimate rules knowledge and the ability to keep track of a somewhat complicated sequence. It's not quite Gitrog Monster levels of hard, but it is still a pretty technical combo that can be just as hard to execute as it can be to interrupt.
