Concert: Beginnings, Gala 2022
Date: 2 April 2022
Composed by Liong Kit Yeng
Set Piece, SYF 2020 (Primary)
Kreta Ayer takes inspiration from the Chinese idiom 饮水思源 (which literally means ‘When one drinks water, think of the source.’), and the historical past of Chinatown, a place where most of the Cantonese immigrants from China settled in during the days of colonial Singapore. Nested in Chinatown, Kreta Ayer Road (which means water cart in Malay) used to be a route where ox and bullock carts transported water drawn from wells around the area.
Taking motivic ideas from intonations of the Cantonese dialect, the piece depicts the
activities of early Chinatown in three sections: Ox and Bullock Carts; Drawing Water from the Well; and Faces of Chinatown. Kreta Ayer was conceived in the year when Singapore marked its Bicentennial. Besides paying tribute to our home country, the composer hopes that the younger generation would also take interest in their cultural roots.
Kreta Ayer was commissioned by the Ministry of Education, Singapore as the set piece for the Singapore Youth Festival 2020 Central Judging of Chinese Orchestra (Primary).
