Rita Coolidge was married to Kris Kristofferson from 1973 to 1980. … In her memoir, Delta Lady, Coolidge described her marriage to Kristofferson as volatile due to his alcoholism and rampant infidelity. She revealed he was also emotionally abusive and would belittle her talent. When they divorced she did not ask him for anything.

I’m sure her story is true but, Kris had some major demons going on. I don’t excuse what he did or what she needed to do but, damn all those demons he had to deal with gave us probably one of the best song writers in generations. None, absolutely none, of todays singers/writers could even lick his boots. It’s terrible to appreciate the results of someone’s pain but, listening to his music puts us on another plane.

Instant connections happen to people all the time. Sometimes it’s just the appreciation for the blue eyes, the smile with a big laugh, or a profile, quickly gone. Other times the connection lasts for years, decades, even though the connection is only briefly acted upon a few times. Did I wish for more? Of course. Did I know as well as he did we’d be a disaster actually together? Reluctantly, yes. Did I love him until the day he died & still do? Absolutely.

50 years ago I would watch the Old Grey Whistle Test for the feast of musical integrity which it represented. Music and the BBC both have disappeared down the sewer long since. Musically, Kris and Rita were a marriage made in heaven but real life, as some of the comments made below point out, was not like that. I think of Kris as, in some ways, similar to Robert Burns. Burns wrote some of the greatest poetry and love songs of all time but was, himself, hardly a model of fidelity. Kris, like Burns, helps you understand the human condition. He had failings as a man (don't we all) but you can never listen to him singing songs like The Pilgrim without being deeply moved.
