Why did a solid portion of our country think that we'd be so much better off under Brexit? Same energy really. I think a lot of us - no matter the country - are having painful realisations that not everyone in our electorate: 1) fully comprehends complex issues. Whether that's because they're not civically engaged or whether it's because they prefer populist rhetoric or have rage that is soothed by populism. 1) Has everyone's best interests at heart when they're casting their vote. A non-significant number of people just want to "hit back" at someone or they're single-issue voters and when it's that issue vs everyone else's wellbeing ... welp. 3) Very, very biased media ecosystem. If you think America struggles with right wing news, we do far worse in intensity and volume I think. Maybe 2-3 mainstream UK publications are left or centrist, the vast majority are rightwing/populist/Murdochian fiefdoms. They are cynical and ruthless in their attack journalism. That's before you even add in the hell of the internet.

@TPaine76

@@alexwyatt2911 I think leaving out the qualifiers would have helped Biden *actually* save face. Interestingly, Bernie Sanders, Chuck Schumer and Nancy Pelosi, all pro-Israel, had no problem condemning Netanyahu once the death and destruction grew to alarming levels and Israel’s complete lack of concern about humanitarian aid or the lives of humanitarian workers became impossible to hide. In general though, it would be nice if politicians cared half as much about “saving lives” as they did about “saving face”. It’s difficult not to feel jaded about Biden and Blinken and other people in the administration when they do this performative nonsense. I’d almost prefer it if they were just upfront and just said: “Yeah, we don’t actually care about starving Palestinian kids…sorry…I mean it’s not personal or anything…we aren’t anti-Muslim or anti-Arab. We have no problem supporting Saudi Arabia, for example, (despite their extremely problematic human rights violations)…it’s just traditional American foreign policy which has always been based on short sighted self-interests. We need to support Israel to make sure the Iranians don’t get too much power in the region. And we need to support the Saudis ‘cuz oil and they’re Sunnis who also hate Iran….Oh look, someone said something anti-Semitic over at an Ivy League! Can you guys get outraged over that and go back to ignoring Palestine (and Sudan and Ukraine) like you have for the last 20 years? Wait, no, Ukraine is important, you should be concerned about the suffering of the poor Ukrainians! Again, not personal …I’m sorry, I’m not a spring chicken and this whole political re-alignment thing gets me confused sometimes but yeah, please continue to ignore what’s happening in the rest of the world. Hey, look over there - it looks like a Republican killed a puppy! Can you please stop talking about the Middle East now? Thanks! Love you guys! Make sure to donate some more money to my campaign and win a chance to eat ice cream with me and the Mrs. down at the beach!” PS: I *loathe* Trump but at least he’s honest about his lack of concern for the people of Gaza. Also, unlike other politicians, he isn’t obsessed about “saving face” (well, aside from using an obscene amount of bronzer). I wonder why half the country finds him “a refreshing alternative” despite his egregious policy positions and his utter contempt for anyone who says anything critical about him?!?

That is completely false, both on its face and by implication. I'm the last one to defend Bibi, but everything you just said is untrue and devoid of context. In his first speech on the evening of October 7, while civilians were still being slaughtered in their homes and battles were still raging across the Gaza Envelope inside Israel, before anyone knew anything regarding the hostage situation beyond the pure violence and brutality of that day, before a single shell had been fired or a single bomb had been dropped in Gaza, Bibi declared war on Hamas and laid out *3* goals, not 5, and they were: *To clear out and secure the towns and cities currently occupied by terrorists *To extract a high price from the enemy, and *To prevent any one else (e.g. Hezbollah, Iran) from joining Hamas and opening additional fronts in the war It would be _days_ before the scale of what happened became in any way clear, with bodies from that day still being identified now, which is one reason you keep seeing the number of hostages dropping even today: forensics established between 30-50 of the people presumed taken hostage on October 7 were in fact killed that day, some of whose bodies were taken hostage to Gaza, while so many others were so badly mangled and mutilated that it took months to establish their sex with any determinacy, let alone their name. Your statement is disingenuous, at best.

It’s who we’ve always been. This isn’t the first time that we’ve had to fight against a fascist movement in the US. Before the US entered WWII, a lot of Americans supported Hitler and fascism; members of Congress were working with literal Nazis and using federal government resources to mail Nazi propaganda to voters. It’s shocking and shameful and it’s true. Many times throughout our country’s history, we have fought among ourselves to keep our country and take a step closer to actually fulfilling the American promise of opportunity, freedom, and equality. Each time brought our nation to the brink of disaster and each time, we managed to hold on by our fingertips. Each time, just enough of us stood our ground for just long enough. Who we are and who we have always been is a country that is divided by belief and united by choice. It’s never been a unanimous decision and it won’t be now. But it doesn’t have to be. It just has to be enough of us.

This is the issue that will cost Biden the election. How could you not come out against genocide from the very outset

I worry about that too (along with worrying about all of the people enduring the war). Biden did come out from the beginning telling Netanyahu not to make the same mistakes America made after 9/11. I think it's somewhat difficult for him to tell somebody else not to wage war when the US went bombing indiscriminately after 9/11 and ended up in a 20-year war causing so much death and destruction.

Probably because it's a very complicated and delicate foreign policy situation and there is a lot riding on it. I trust the experts here.

@@blaisemacpherson7637 " We cant come out against punching babies in the face because its a delicate issue" like wtf, GENOCIDE IS WRONG. Im so sick of the "we need to tiptoe around this issue" while continuing to supply the bombs they are dropping on children.

@@blaisemacpherson7637It really isn't complicated, Israel is engaging in genocide. That's something that needs to be stopped.

I’m listening from Australia, what’s the best way to support (Donation is my guess?)….and why? Aside from concern about global affairs, MAGA politics pops its head up down here which is something I’d very much like to squash before it becomes to much of a problem (And given our building social problems, it’s become more of a concern then more I think about it)

I just looked at a picture of Melania and then you look at Kristi Noem, she basically copied Melania's look just for that spot on the Trump train. What is wrong with these people?
