As someone who also graduated in 2002, a graduation speech like that TOTALLY CHECKS for that year hahah. Side note, the reason why they look so much better now is because we didn't have things like makeup brushes then. We didn't know our skin type. We just slapped on covergirl aquasmooth, put on some REALLY REALLY shimmery eyeshadow with some terrible mascara, add some gloopy lipgloss and called it a day. Sephora wasn't a thing then. You just went to CVS and hoped for the best.

I was in college during Y2k, and my dad was a mainframe programmer. The issue was dates were stored by the last two digits, so when the year turned 2000, there were computers thinking it was 1900. The main reason it did not turn into a big deal is a LOT of programmers worked very hard to update crucial storage of data so that the date storage could allow for years beyond 1999.
@ruarrow2843
Жыл бұрын
absolutely. and they dragged anyone who was remotely capable into it as well. my dad was one of those people. many people really don't seem to know how close we were to a total system collapse of *anything* that used a computer to function at that time. which is kinda wild, given how massive the dystopian fiction market is XD
@sura-quayarbon6055
Жыл бұрын
Yeah its such a shame because people outside of programmers/IT of that time are like oh it was no big deal, people just made a big deal out of nothing... no, hundreds of thousands of people just in this country busted their ass to prevent it from turning into a global catastrophe and extrapolate that across all countries. I wasn't in IT but I was in the military and dealt with systems that would have been impacted and we were so scared when it turned over but there were only a few small glitches, sighs of relief all around. Only because so many people worked together to make the fixes.

@@ruarrow2843 I grew up during the 1990's and was just about to go into high school when Y2K hit. From a non-involved person, with NO family or friends involved in this, I can explain: People mass panicked, then nothing bad happened, so they turned around and began making fun of everyone for being so crazed over it. Media, culture, news, family, friends - everywhere just turned around and acted like it was a massive joke. This video/comment section is how I figured out THERE WAS INDEED AN ACTUAL THREAT. Literally, since Jan 01 2000, I have believed that was all BS and the world just got it's knickers in a twisted panic over some unrelated nonsense made up by ancient Mayans. That it was all superstitious nonsense and that no one was ever in any real danger. That the idea the world would fall because a few lines of code didn't go far enough and were based on a limited calendar... was absurd! Obviously, since we're all still here, that was nonsense... Because that's what the public belief was afterwards. All the adults and world around went "oh. nothing ended. that was stupid. we just panic-bought out stores of goods for no reason." so naturally the perception was rewritten to "this was a stupid panic over nothing - lol" in the mainstream. It's a pity, clearly we need to know more about the efforts and what was at stake! TY to your father's and to those others who worked hard to make the changes. :)

Oh man, that whole progression of "one day I'll be pretty!" is so accurate I feel it in my fucking spleen. It's just really fucked that we have to go through so much trauma to get to a point where we can accept that we're pretty without having to be mainstream hot. It's always gonna be uphill, though. Oof. That said, Kristin, you should do more chill videos with no makeup. Let us see your natural beauty.

Yeah there's a difference between using makeup to express yourself and using it to be accepted. You can see the difference too. When someone's wearing makeup just because *they* want to they just generally look so much better because of the confidence behind it. With that said I say wear makeup if you want to. Telling someone to not wear it is almost as bad as telling someone to wear it - if not worse honestly. Just do you however you want to do you.

Kristin is such a boss to share this with the internet 😂 10:22 - I love a confident self-love mirror moment 👁 11:21 - I screamed at the grandma joke 😂 yes for dark humor

You know what I think it is about the next generation making trends look better, especially with the y2k stuff now? Back then, we just slapped that make up on with our fingers and called it a day, no primers, no brushes(!!), the only thing you'd consistently see were the spongy eye shadow appplicators that just made things worse. Today we have so many tools at our disposal, as well as years of developing methods of how to apply product xyz. Nevermind there being way more color matches and shades in different textures and finishes now. And, I mean, who would get the idea to use goddamn mousse foundation in this day and age????
