"Ajoen Ajoen" is an old kroncong (krontjong) number and a well known children's song from the former Dutch East Indies. It was sung in schools and by babus (nannies). There is both a Malay and Dutch text. The meaning of "Ajoen Ajoen" is swinging (in the high coconut tree).
It was already mentioned in an old paper from 1885. The oldest known recording of "Ajoen Ajoen" was made by Lagoe Stamboel Batavia (Beka Records) in 1906. Beka was a German label established in 1903 by the company Bumb & Koenig GmbH, Berlin.
"Ajoen Ajoen" was made by the Hague krontjong ensemble Eurasia in London (Edison Bell Studio) in 1928. Eurasia was a band formed by Indonesian students from Leiden and Delft. Hannie Maks played the krontjong (keroncong) guitar.
The keroncong guitar is a small ukulele-type slender guitar (related to the Portuguese cavaquinho) from Java island, Indonesia, mainly used in Keroncong music (pronounced "kron-chong"), which has Portuguese influence (from the late 19th century).
