We spent 10 days in the Kruger National Park in what is becoming an annual tradition for Prasheen and myself. We started off birding up in the Northern part of the park. on an Extreme Birding weekend with the West Rand honorary rangers and then worked our way down the Park to Sirheni, Shingwedzi, Lethaba and Satara.
This is the third episode - our full day of extreme birding. I don’t think we fully comprehended how extreme the extreme birding would be! With a 1:45am camp departure we were up at 1am. And we were then basically on the move from 1:45am almost all the way through the day to well after 7pm and even after we had returned to camp! Our truck recorded 237 birds over the Friday and Saturday, 10 more than the next closest truck. This was down mainly to an excellent guide in Nick but also some sharp eyed birders who were on the truck with us!
An excellent day all in all but draining and perhaps not one for everybody! But certainly very productive with the racket tailed roller being right at the top of the list and bohms spinetail closely after. Personally it was also great to break the duck on the dwarf bittern and we then saw it two more times in the park in the following days driving on our own.
Stay turned for the exciting episodes to come.
