They would have finished higher with greater start value. Unfortunately Russia didn’t take as much advantage of that particular code as they could have, and it ultimately cost them. (In team of course it was the mistakes, but individually…)

I wish the Russian coaches had taken full advantage of the open code. They were more focused on preserving the classic Russian artistry, which I love, but they should have focused a bit more on the difficulty, which probably would've placed the team on the podium even with their mistakes, and probably Semenova on the AA podium as well. The 3rd pass is way too easy for her

@@mht4908here’s the reason she didn’t medal- START VALUE. Even with the errors Fei had substantial start value. Ana had just enough SV to contend for bronze- UNTIL THE MISSED ELEMENT. That lowered the start value and cost in deduction. Want a medal? Don’t make big mistakes.

So glad you aren't just saying this to be rude. The problem is that execution scores barring major mistakes tend to be the same throughout all routines. Anna's AA floor deserved a much higher E score, even if her D score was a 5.9. I saw .3 in errors. Vault I think scores most fairly. But, yeah Nastia is overscored in so many areas- beam and bars and floor. (.6 just in tumbling in the AA)

@Gazmeizster_Wongatron

Well opinions can be wrong. 😅 The Chinese team actually had more difficulty overall compared to every other team (about 2.0 higher than the US in TF). You have to judge them by the 2006-2008 code of points, which they knew how to work well. The problem for the Russians was that they didn't know how to work the code. Pavlova had a UB routine with literally ZERO connection value (in a code of points that gave out CV like candy) and Semenova's routine here had a third pass that also got not no CV. They were counting too many B and C elements, unlike the US and China who made sure that mostly D and E skills were counted.

Shawn got enough around to be classified as a 2.5. They should have deducted her maybe .1 or .2 more. But on her beam and floor she has been underscored too many times throughout the games. Her execution on everything but leaps and handstands is picture perfect. If Nastia was deducted like she was supposed to be deducted, she would never score above a 16 on bars. On bars: Bent legs on downswings, separated on giants. Constant struggling with pak salto. Pavlova was underscored on beam and floor.
