Millions of Americans suffer from hypertension or high blood pressure, frequently unaware they have it as well as not fully understanding just how dangerous it can be. Often called “the silent killer” because there are no symptoms until damage occurs, high blood pressure is the leading cause of death and the number one risk factor for heart attack and stroke. Because of the lack of symptoms and the significant health threat it presents, it is essential for people to be aware of their risk factors, regularly check and monitor their blood pressure, and if elevated make sure they are working to actively manage their condition.
Certain risk factors are well-known, such as obesity, lack of exercise, and family history. However, due to less commonly known factors, people can face a much greater risk for developing hypertension and be completely unaware.
HELLP (Hemolysis, Elevated Liver enzymes and Low Platelets) Syndrome is a life-threatening pregnancy complication and women are often completely unaware that it can put them at an increased risk many years later. Women who have no history of hypertension can develop it during pregnancy, which is called preeclampsia, and can have lasting high blood pressure to manage throughout their life or they can develop high blood pressure after they give birth. HELLP affects the blood and liver in a variety of ways including high blood pressure, liver dysfunction, and blood problems, including clotting difficulties. HELLP can develop during pregnancy or up to seven days after childbirth and women with preeclampsia are at an increased risk.
