Please note: the 390 manual states oil/filter change interval as 7500km, not 10000km. However we change it at 5000km, probably a better option for off-road use.
@twowheeledparadox
3 жыл бұрын
Definitely a better option. For my 200 Duke, the recommended interval for oil change was 5000 km and the prescribed oil was Motul 7100 20W50. If memory serves, the BS3 390 Duke had the same interval until they revised it for the BS4 and the subsequent BS6 version. Manufacturer recommended oil is 7100 10W50 so it should be subject to the same amount of degradation, if not more, considering how high strung this engine is.

Good review. However, as a very experienced rider, I feel this bike is perfect for people like me too. A lot of people like me have bought it because we want a lightweight adventure bike that is good enough on the highways and pretty capable off road- esp when travelling- not necessarily enduro or just hooning around in the dirt. I have ridden all the adv bikes out there but there simplicity and ease of the 390 is what sold it to me. Done all kinds of gnarly stuff and a mx track too- wheels and everything else seemed to take the beating well haha. Keep up the good work!

Great review - best on youtube. Just wondered if Nat considered the 690 Enduro? I have one and use it as a lightweight adventure bike. Dealer fitted the KTM lowering kit as I am not very tall. Then I got a Seat Concept seat for comfort over distance. Lightweight comfy and tons of grunt....only thing missing is windscreen and decent dash - no fuel gauge and gear indicator! Not sure about Aussie prices but only about £2,200 more in UK for a 690 v 390 new when I bought mine.

I've been looking for a knowledgeable 10 km review of the KTM 390 ADV. Thanks Nat! You are definitely using your 390 ADV more aggressively than the designers intended. I tried to find a 390 ADV last fall but my local KTM dealer only stocks their dirt bikes and didn't seem that interested in ordering one for me. I got a BMW G310GS, which is in the same class. I'd always ridden dual sport thumpers but always wanted a smaller displacement ADV bike, and we finally have a few. I'm 60 so I decided for something more refined than the dual sport bikes, and I'm very happy with the baby GS. I'm keeping the alloy wheels. I might do mild off road but my trail bashing days are in the rear view mirror. My goal is back roads and dirt roads, with some motorcycle camping. The baby GS looks bigger than it is. I'm a big guy and it's too small for me. I mostly notice it where my knees extend beyond the tank cutouts. I'd like to find an aftermarket seat like yours that is flat so I can slide back a bit. I enjoyed seeing the mods you've done, and I was glad to hear that your 390 ADV has been reliable and low maintenance.

Great detailed review. I bought a 390 Adv 12 months ago, but sold it after 8 months as I found it too low, too cramped, awfully in-the-face windy at speed, and a pain to lift for simple tasks like lubing the chain. I played around with the windscreen height, and a couple of wind deflectors, but just hated riding it over 80kmh. It must be my height or riding position, as I know others have been fine. It also wasn’t a good fit with my mostly off-road riding where it was too low and cramped, and felt vulnerable. As an ‘adventure bike’, ie mixed bitumen and dirt roads, as distinct from rough tracks, and for the right height person, I think it’d be a good bike. I also have a Wr250R, which has just been discontinued, and am hoping Yamaha bring out a bike that sits between it and a T700 ...

Great bike and surprisingly capable off-road. Just a heads up on the bash plate. I HAD the same one until it caught on fire last weekend. It must have flexed onto the exhaust and made a bond. I pulled up to check a track out and smelt the plastic only to look down and there was fire licking my left leg. Lucky a 4x4 was passing and I used their fire extinguisher to put it out. I have a photo but don’t know how to load it here. Anyway, it was ablaze with a hole about 5inches long melted away.

If it suits your needs and does what you want, it's a great bike and the right one for you. Nat, you are a legend! I've watched plenty of the vids on the 390 ADV and this is one of the better ones...congrats! I'm one of the niches for this bike you mention: older guy (66) who doesn't want a heavy bike off road, (I frequently ride alone). I have plenty of road experience but not so much off road. I bought one of these 390 ADVs and found it is confidence-inspiring off road (though as you point out, better tires for off road are essential). I'm doing more dirt on this one than I ever tried on my brief time with a DRZ400 (a fine bike but I never fell in love with it). You mentioned the real secret of this bike: its low initial cost allows you to mod the hell out of it and still come away for less than bikes similarly equipped new, (and which you'd also end up modding as well, adding to the price spread). I've found I much prefer bigger pegs with no angle, and tomorrow I'm trying my latest mod: a double-level brake step plate to help with braking while standing. I think the flatter pegs and the range of brake pedal adjustment made braking while standing more difficult with the stock, single level, brake step plate. Similar to your approach to the hand guards, I'm waiting until I bend a rim before shelling out for the spokes. So far, no problem.
@LiveViewable
3 жыл бұрын
If you're driving in your area, no problem. It's worse if you damage the rim during the longer trip. Steel rims with tubes are easier to repair.

I looked at the 390 adventure and always curious about it. Another great option is a factory method lowered DR650. Flip some parts for and aft and it's 40mm lower and feels like sitting on a DR200. Lowered a DR has a lower seat than the 390 with much more ground clearance and you can raise it later easily if you want. Weight is similar between 2 of them. You could spend money to improve both but DR's have a lot of options from a long 25 year history of being unchanged. I've highway toured on mine doing several 1000km days and you just have to do a quick search to find their capability off the road. I've only ever had to fix a very easy cam chain tensioner gasket that started to leak - $4. Not a bad record in over 50,000km. Weight is similar between 2 of them. You could spend money to improve both. A DR is as 50/50 on/off road as bikes get. Same price for both in Canada.

Yeah, it's been mentioned before. DRs are a solid choice but no 6th gear and no FI are it's main downfalls, the only things that really can't be easily fixed with them. But those things aren't important to everyone, that's for sure 🙌

I think KTM missed a trick with the 390, as they mounted the engine really low in the chassis. If they had lifted up a few inches it would have given much more ground clearance and made it a much better off road bike. Great job though. 10k has flown by!

Greetings from India! Excellent review! You covered a lot of aspects of this motorcycle which overcame my short attention span and had me watching the whole thing! I am a bit disappointed to know that the front suspension bottoms out even for you, Nat, who probably weighs somewhere in the mid 50 kg range. I picked up a 390 Duke in 2019 instead of the Adventure even though I was waiting for this bike to come out since maybe 2016. I wasn't impressed by the street oriented suspension and didn't want to deal with first batch issues. I think it turned out to be a good decision. But why am I disappointed? Because I still have my old 200 Duke and wanted to fit the front suspension of the 390 Adventure on it. Now, that bike weighs only 136 kg wet (40 kg lighter than your bike!) but I weigh close to 100 kg myself so I will face that problem even more. About the stalling, that clutch lever sensor issue is well known among the 390 community as it also affects the BS6 390 Duke. I have a suggestion about the exhaust, if you are planning a cat delete. You could check if the BS4 390 Duke exhaust header (the one that wraps around the engine) fits your bike. Getting that will free up around 20 mm of space under the engine. The BS6 emission norm necessitated a bigger cat closer to the engine because of which the 390/250 Duke/Adventure have the exhaust routed underneath the engine instead of around it. Just a suggestion.

The local dealership has 1 in stock at last so I put my ass on the seat for about 15 minutes on Tuesday afternoon on my way home from work ... OH MY !!! SO NICE !!! The seat is way more comfortable than the CRF 300 Rally Full adjustable forks only preload and rebound on the rear shock. And considering my intended use is 70% on road 30% off road + the parts availability I think it might just fit what I'm looking for.! If I get fit enough over the next year I might think about the CRF300L for single track next year !

Still sounds OK for me. 75% of my riding is on the black top, but I need something that can handle dirt roads as well as going interstate. I've had a few bikes, and my Honda CBR500 has been the best. Getting it bogged, being light its easy to get out but it is very low being a street bike. Paint fade is a thing and the chain\sprocket it comes with are really cheap. Replaced these at 6000 for better.

Good review. I bought one of these last October and due to lockdown in the UK still haven't done the first 600 miles for the first service. I don't really do the stuff you do but travel all over continental Europe each summer doing a lot of fire roads etc on the way. Always ride something that can if necessary keep up with traffic on the motorways but is OK on rough tracks. For many years rode big BMW's and Triumphs but in 2108 dropped my Triumph 800 xc on a gravel track in Spain and me and my son spent half hour getting the luggage off it to stand it up. Decided at the time if I'd been on my own would have been stuck miles from anywhere so needed something lighter. Bought a couple of Kawasaki 300 X for the same price as replacing the Triumph and did three thousand mile trip through France the next year. So much cheaper and they did everything we wanted. The only thing that annoyed me was the screaming engine at motorway speeds so tried out one of these last summer and fell in love with it. Took weeks to get one because of back orders, obviously lots of people waiting for it to come out in the UK. LIke you say it's a pity about the cast wheels but I guess they were working to a budget. The little kawasaki had spokes but of course it didn't have the tech. Thanks again for the review, I can't wait to really try it out this summer.

Hi, great vid! First 10.000 KM review I've seen. I may be a bit taller than you at 5 10" w 30-inch inseam. Been going back and forth between this bike or the Hona 300 Rally? Did you look at that for all the off-road riding you do? By far my favorite 390 Adv vid it talks about the things I worry about. With the new bike, I am hoping mostly off-road. I have a big 950 Yammy bolt for in-city driving in Medellin Colombia. But badly need another bike for real trips outside of the city!

I own the KTM Duke 890R (not adventure) I would like to buy a touring/adventure bike. But I would like to keep my 890R I have spent to much money on it to sell allready. So the second bike must be a bit cheaper. So the 2 most interesting bikes right now would be the 390 Adventure or the Aprilia 660 Tuareg. It doesnt need to be super good offroad. I dont have that condition in my countrie. But with good tires and okay suspensioon it should handle gravel roads in bad condition

The air filter pre-filter looks like a type of foam that could purchased at a craft & material store. As they sell different types of foams here. I heard on some videos that a Royal Enfield Himalayan motorcycle clutch cable is near an exact fit but longer and people use it when installing bar riser. So it is an ADV not an enduro.

I was wondering why someone would choose the 390 over a (lowered DR650)? The DR is the same weight and both will probably be the same on the highway. The DR is actually lower seat height but has more travel and clearance. I have never heard of anyone complain about the DR breaking down because it's so simple. No electronics to break or go wrong. 5 million parts to upgrade it and has a 21 inch front tire. I'm not convinced anything about the ktm390 is better than the DR besides maybe brakes. At least not after mods are done. Great video guy's! 👍I think I saw you in biker bits one or 2 times in the comments maybe.. live that channel.

Come back with the DR650 spiel when they've got 6-speed gearbox and fuel injection mods for it 😁 I know these things aren't important to some people, and maybe rightly so... the DRs may be dinosaurs but they've well & truly proven themselves over the years. Definitely more dirt capable than the 390 too. However when you're talking about people of the female persuasion, looks and style have a part to play also. The DR probably just isn't "cool" enough. Actually I shouldn't knock the chicks, it's pretty much the same reason I went for the T7 over the dinosaurs 😄🙏 Thanks for the comment mate

Having a set of 19/17" wire spoked wheels that nobody seams to want to buy for one of these(eBay for months at half of KTM's price), I hadn't even looked into these, and I've just realised these are a good replacement for the Suzuki DR-Z400! Power/torque very similar, just made in different centuries by the look of them? Spent about 5hrs there after watching this, yup, interested... 390cc is more than enough off-road, I've a Husaberg FE390, that thing takes me where other bikes wont(mate's new SWM 500 doesn't look near it).

I highly recommend the 14 tooth front sprocket. Huge difference. I can now pop up the front wheel without popping the clutch. Quick fix for more low end torque. Also tires suggestions. The Pirelli Scorpion rally front tire is awesome. Expensive but has worn well and handled great offroad. I also recommend the Motoz Tractionator for the rear. Both are stock sizes. Huge upgrades. I took this setup through the Continental divide 1656 miles in 6 days. Went through some serious gnar on optional tracks during that time with no issues. Just fyi
