If you check the valve clearance, you have the hard part done. A few tips. Clean the area around the cover very well, then clean it again. Take off the radiator (good time to change that fluid) and the rubber tank buffers. Move everything you can out of the way. stuff rags in all the holes leading to the crankcase. The first bolt you drop will fall right onto the rag and make you feel like a pro for your foresight. Zip tie the chain to the cam sprockets. It is possible to jump timing on the bottom end, but I've done it a few times with no problem. But check the timing afterward anyway. Roll the cams toward the middle, moving them as little as possible. Use a magnet to lift off the shims, measure them, and set them on a quad-ruled piece of paper with the original clearance, measured thickness, and the thickness the new shim should be. Hot Cams sells a full set of shims for about 85 bucks. Install the cam chain tensioner BEFORE you check the timing, and before you put the cover back on. Easy-peasy. The first time I did it I got frustrated trying to get an accurate clearance reading (definitely the hardest part) so I pulled the engine to do that. Don't do it. Check clearance from both directions and use good feelers with tapered ends. I've done the entire job in less than three hours. My 2020 ADV has 20K miles. I've checked the clearance three times and changed shims twice. I set the clearance at the loose end of the spec.

Great description thanks. I am planning to pull the tank and radiator. I am also planning to replace the water pump impeller and water seal since I am draining the coolant. I am going to wash the bike real well and also be very meticulous about cleanliness l, just as you describe. Filming it will add a lot of time but it's all good.

For coolant temperature put also higher pressure radiator cap. That works for motocross racing bikes and also for track bikes i.e. regular cap for my ZX6R is 1.3 bars, I've put 2.1 bars cap and temperature went down sometimes between 5-7 degrees Celsius on a hot track day compared to before.

I have had three chains on my bike. 1: Bajaj - 7K miles 2: RK - 15K miles 3: DID - 10K The Baja was junk. The RK was fine, however, I was switching to the Tubeless spoked wheels and had a new sprocket for the wheel, so I changed the chain as well. (I wanted to go back to stock gearing) The DID is in excellent shape, and there is no sign of sprocket wear. I change sprockets. The front looked like new when I changed to the DID. The rear had mild signs of wear, no need to replace, and the front looked like new. So new that I left it on. So that front has almost 20K miles and IMHO, is fine to this day. - Frank

Change the water pump oil seals (there's two of them) when you change the coolant. You're at the limit or maybe past the point where a failure of these oil seals will cause coolant to enter the engine. I hear it does happen on the KTM 390 engines. You may want to get the throttle body cleaned as well.
@advmatt

Follow up to my earlier comment: My Adv 390 has 28k km, about 17k miles on it. Gave it for service and the throttle body was cleaned. The butterfly valve was f.i.l.t.h.y., completely coated with carbon. Perhaps this made worse because of sometmes using fuel of lower quality in places like Ladakh where I had no other choice. Petrol sold in India is 91 octane and higher grades are only rarely available in premium outlets in cities plus fuel in far flung areas is not the best. I was told the replacement interval for the water pump seals is about 10000 miles so you definitely should replace those too.

Hey Matt I'm looking forward to seeing you performing your winter maintenance on the 390. This winter my wife's 2021 is also getting new sprockets and chain (originals totally shot after 15,000 km (about 9,300 miles) and it''s also time to adjust the valves which I will do myself. I'm wondering if you have had any issues with the transmission hanging between being in neutral and in gear and if you have heard of the Factory Pro 390 Shift Kit from Rottweiler which has a stronger spring and ceramic roller bearing. This supposedly virtually eliminates missed shifts and false neutrals. I get a few complaints from my wife about this especially at stop lights. One last question. I have read that quite a few 390 owners swear by going down one tooth on the front sprocket from 15T to 14T it really helps with low speed torque as well as performance on the highway without a significant impact on mileage. Have you tried the smaller sprocket? That little 390 loves to rev and after my wife complained about lack of power on hills and finally accepted that it was ok to rev over 6,000 rpm I can't keep up with her on my KLR! Love the content and keep it coming Matt! We appreciate the effort and detail you put into your channel.

Thanks for the feedback, I really appreciate it. I have not gone down a tooth on the front sprocket because I Rev the heck out of the engine and never thought it needed it. This engine loves to be revved. I am aware of the Rottweiler shift kit. I looked into it but didn't want to split the case to do the install, or at least that is what I remember about it. As for shifting I found that if I didn't fully engage the clutch and was lazy lifting the shift lever with my toe or dropping the gear lever I would find false neutrals. Once I started shifting with intention I rarely experienced that issue. The only issue that I find annoying is finding neutral, but it is a KTM thing. I have learned to rock the bike with the clutch and slip it into neutral. Beyond that I just ride it. Cheers.

Impressive mileage! Maybe you could just check valve clearances and only take the bike in if shim changes are required? The original steel sprockets should last the life of the bike if you buy 3 quality chains when you buy the bike and regularly rotate them. And immediately throw the OE in the bin before it trashes the sprockets. Has oil consumption gone down or up? What about a leak-down test? Thanks for all the testing!
@advmatt
Жыл бұрын
Good idea to check clearances and take it in if new shims are needed. I might do that. I have not done a leak down test but it is not a bad idea. You are spot on with the chain and sprockets. Overall, though, it has been a great bike.

I am not feeling a lot of love for the T7 (minimal discussion and videos)? Accurate? I actually sold my T7 a few weeks ago due to riding solo most of the time and weight anxiety lifting it (among other reasons). I currently have a WR250R which I love, but considering adding a 390 at some point for a more street bias bike. Cheers,

I have a video on the T7 coming later this week. I think the Adventure community overall has turned away from the T7. I don't see much new content. I have several more videos planned for T7 not including some upcoming long distance trips. I have been separated from my bikes for almost three months so I am running put canned content. More to come for sure on both bikes.

I am using the Puig windscreen, and yes it is better than previous windscreens. I shimmed it a bit to sit more upright and it has been a huge improvement over all the others. It does feel a bit close when riding offroad, but I can deal with that for better long distance road comfort.
