We planned a three-day offroad riding in southern Tuscany and Umbria, but heavy rains were expected in the area, so we opted for a more touristic ride. The result was less adventurous for sure, still amazing.
Starting from Milano, we left the A1 highway just south of Bologna (Sassomarconi exit) and rode the three famous passes Raticosa, Futa and Giogo. We headed to the Mugello Circuit after stopping for lunch at Antica Osteria Nandone, known as one of the best steaks' places in the area. Our final destination for the day was Arezzo, which we reached via the winding roads crossing the Casentino forest through the Croce ai Mori pass and Poppi medieval town.
Day two was dedicated to the notorious (but still beautiful) Eroica gravel road. We decided, however, not to follow the entire Eroica route, but to make some occasional de-tours, reaching Montalcino as southest point and getting back from Arezzo from there. Every road, gravel or paved, every hill, every town around here is so stunning that my suggestion is to take a random road and follow it. Draw an imaginary triangle between Siena, Castiglion Fiorentino and Pienza, get lost around there and you won't be disappointed.
On the third and last day we had to sadly head back north, but it was easy to make a great ride out of it. Did you know that there's a Grand Canyon-like scenery in Tuscany? It's called "Balze del Valdarno", and we got there via the scenic Setteponti road, named after the seven bridges over the Arno river that it goes through. One of these bridges, Buriano, is said to be the one depicted in the background of the Mona Lisa by Leonardo Da Vinci. We then rode up the Alpine-like road to the 1.000m high Vallombrosa Abbey and got back down to the Chianti region, where we stopped for lunch at Enoteca il Quartino, surrounded by endless vineyards. From there, in a couple of hours-ride we crossed the Emilia-Romagna border to reach the smallest volcano in Italy on the Busca Mount. Another hour of winding roads and we reached Imola, where we sadly had to take the highway back home.
