Nikola, the designer of the rack, made this suggestion to me in an email... Hi Mike, glad to hear from you again. Great video, as always. I realize that you will have both Rotopax cans full only for the Baja "Fuel gap", but I would like to point out few things. When rack is loaded, center of the mass is a bit beyond bolt points. That can cause the rack to bounce, if bike is ridden hard and fast over bumpy surface. And that could lead to rack failure, or worst, could pull out threaded inserts out of the tank. It is relatively easy to prevent this - just strap the load on the rack to the tail, so it can't bounce. I did some write up on that subject here - www.perunmoto.com/blogs/blog/73943811-rotopax-and-perun-moto-ktm-690-luggage-rack-sd, near the end of the post.

Update. On the first day of being on a rough car road in Baja, the extension mount (for mounting two canisters) bolt broke. I had to empty out the water to lose the weight, then strapped it down, to finish the ride. The rest of the 9 day trip I just kept the fuel container on the rack with no problems.

telerover hi where you at all worried about the weight pulling the threads out from the tank bouncing up and on rough terrain I have just bought my first 690 and am looking at mods for it Keeps you videos coming give deacon a treat 😋

On my first (mild) outing the top bolt broke on the water jug. I had to empty it and strap it down. I never used it after that. Only put one can on your rack and tie it down with straps.

another update. its now 2018 and i have migrated to not using the Rotopax at all by putting 4 1 liter bottles on the vack of Wolfman Rocky Mountain saddle bags. #wolfmanluggage

I really like this reserve packs. You can put it on for long range or put it off and cruise in your city. For Baja and other long trips, i also could recommend the safari tank for the 690. It provides you an additional real front tank.

Slick, been thinking about adding a rotopax to my 690 but wasn't sure how it would workout. thanks for showing us. Have fun in Baja.

my rack says 5kg (11lbs) max. I think that you can get away with a little more weight on the highway, but offroad like on washboard sections I don't think I would overload it too much without extra struts to the frame. the ring on the filler spout inside the Rotopax is probably a lock valve, it won't let the fuel out until you get the spout into the filler neck and push down to release the valve.

Always enjoyed your posts and have done a lot of mods/accessories based on your vids! Just a bit worried that you might have too much weight on the tail when filled? Did you upgrade your tank bolts?Cheers.

+Ricardo Mendoza The KTM 690R is the best all-around motorcycle I've ever owned (in 55 years of riding). I don't know who you are referencing, maybe the Dakar also-rans? 10,000Km (6243mi) service intervals (between oil changes) is the norm. If there is one available, buy it, as there are 5 other buyers behind you waiting for one.

+Ricardo Mendoza That is not to say that the 690 can not be made better, like tank bolt replacements, seat and lower temp fan switches, but the cool thing is that everyone has worked out all the bugs. The dominance in the Dakar of the 690 LC4 engine is what caused the Japanese manufacturers to force the displacement of the bikes to 450cc., but they did not count on KTM using the same frame and engine but with a lower displacement. They still keep winning.

its a one way valve breather, so when you fall over fuel stays in the tank. Look on eBay for "Motorcycle Gas Fuel Cap Vent Valve Vent Breather Hose Tube For Atv Pit Dirt Bike Tank"

One year later I am heading over to Baja from San Carlos and I need to carry an extra quart of fuel as there is a 257 mile leg, I get 60 mpg, and I'll need 4.28 gallons. The gas tank is 3 gallons (180 miles), the rotopax is 1 gallon, so I need .28 gallons to make it. Maybe I'll buy a half gallon milk jug.

The Yellow collar is a Childproofing device . You have to unlock it the spout is spring loaded you push down the spout against the lip of your gas tank , the fuel flows until you let up automatically that collar and spring act to close off fuel flow . If you leave the spout on the can a Small kid cannot spill the fuel if unattended . That is the reason for the yellow collar / Switch .... On some cans it is a green collar . Again Childproofing .

Hey Tele Rover. Nice video. Wish I was going on a Baja adventure ride. Just wanted to chime in and let you know they do make a better securing handle for the rotopax and with your arthritis it may help you get those pax a bit tighter. rotopax.com/DLX-T-Handle.html They also have locking handles but they can be easily defeated when stacking pax.

Rene, I tend to agree with you. On our ride The screw that held the top water canister broke and I had to strap it on. Another year later I now just use four 1 liter bottles for extra gas in my saddle bags to lower the weight and to give my aging legs some swing room onto the saddle.
