Is that electronics package on 890 really that different from 790? I mostly ride in sand and deep loose sand and on 790 in rally mode with TC on 1 it is still interfering too much and cutting power when I need max wheel spin. Turning TC off in the menus every time I cycle the key is PITA.

Yes, it is an entirely new application from the 790, created just for KTM by Bosch. It allow us to tune each level independently, which was impossible with the previous software. Level 1 is basically off and you will never feel any interventions.

Please explain why KTM has yet to release a 690 adventure variant. The 890 Adventure is great, but why screw around with a 390 Adventure? KTM should've leveraged its 690 Dakar successes years ago. Give me a 690 RFR for the masses.

We would argue that the 690 is already an adventure model. It just depends on how you set it up. Ad a wind screen of some sort, a set of rackless panniers and away you go.

Huge KTM fan and continue to be impressed with overall performance and engineering. Remain somewhat concerned about the 790/890 reliability with regard to electronics, rear shock, brakes and other issues I have heard about. Very happy with my 2019 690 Enduro R and it has held up very well as a lightweight adventure bike; I have a 2012 R1200GS for more travel oriented adventure. The 890 is intriguing to me as an option to consolidate but need more confidence in the platform.

Most of those concerns were based on the very first bikes coming to market and issues for the most part have been addressed. Granted no machine is perfect. Our 2019 790 had 20K on it and it was flawless with proper care and maintenance.

I have a 2020 790 Adventure, one I picked up thanks to the huge discount since those are being discontinued. My 2020 has all the problems mentioned for 2019 "early first bikes". None of those are hard to fix but definitely an annoyance. 890 seems to be addressing the two biggest issues, bigger and heavier engine addresses the low end lack of power and addresses the clutch reliability problem. In my view, one should keep the GS for the road if you want a comfortable and laid back ride. KTM 790 (and likely 890) does not like going slow or comfortably. When you try to go slow, it literally stalls. And, when you open it up, it just goes and goes. No middle ground. It is ready to race, not tour :-)

Were the brake disc "buttons" that attach the discs to the hubs improved over the 790? Bret Tkacs has a video ("Don't buy a KTM 790 / 890 Adventure r or s until you watch this review") showing where his apparently loosened up to the point the discs were flopping around. The rear caliper mount broke too. I may be buying a 890 in April, and would sure like to know.

Also can't wait for the grip heater option to become available.

There are a ton of reasons why something like a paper filter comes from the factory. The main culprit is the government. Intake noise is a factor as is flow affecting emissions etc. We were running the foam filters on ours in Baja. Pretty sure that Twin Air has developed a replacement.

Also, it seems a cheap thing to do to include Rally mode on the 790 Adventure R and it’s extra on the 890. Why!? Thanks from Colorado! P.S. KTM’s website leaves a LOT to be desired. For instance, I think the cruise control switch is included on the 890 but it was a $85 option you had to buy in addition to the Cruise Control package. I have yet to see anywhere besides a press release or two that mentions that. Why isn’t this on KTM’s website? Also, the power parts catalog isn’t updated for 2021 yet that I see. It’s February 2021.

Indeed folkes. Some time ago i was planning to buy the 890r for a very large trip trough Turkey, Iran and Armenia. I know it is not a very reliable bike. But i would have taken the gamble. But what hold me back in the end was that KTM build in features and then blocked it. So with the salespitch at the dealer there was a lot of money to be gained extra. I do not like such things. It feels like being ripped. And it would have messed with the joy i would have had with a new bike. So i went away. I own a 1190 R. And also had a another KTM years ago. But this is not the way i want to buy a bike. Or anything else for that matter. I hate to say it but i will be going for a t7 or the Aprillia 660. In my field of expertise (percussion instruments), some of the best products are made in China - as good or sometimes better than is made in Europe or the U.S. Wake up - it's not the '70s anymore. At least judge a bike on it's actual performance, reliability and durability, not on 50 year old dogma; and don't you think that a major high-end motorcycle manufacturer is going to make damn sure that even if it is made in China, it's up to their spec, with the same materials they would use elsewhere?

There are lots of instances of Chinese factories "borrowing" a customers design and manufacturing additional units to sell on the gray market. It happens far more than it should in the motorcycle industry. And of course there are plenty of western customers simply going to a factory with a marquis brand's product and having them copy it. That's not necessarily the Chinese factories fault. A global economy with manufacturing being largely handled in a country that doesn't have any real incentive to protect intellectual property is always going to be a potential problem.
