Like all your other 1290 repair/maintenance vids, great job. Taking a small wheel grinder to the flared rivets will make the chain break much easier.

Thanks for the video Mario👏, it was very helpful as always. A couple of things I did differently was get my wife to stomp on the rear brake pedal while I loosened and tightened the front sprocket nut. I didn't loosen the swingarm to replace the front sprocket. It came off OK with the swingarm in place albeit with little clearance. I got 39,000km out of the original chain and sprocket set using a Scottoiler to lubricate. The chain was at its wear limit for length and the front sprockets had appreciable wear, so definitely in need of replacement. I am happy with that, 39,000km is a good result for a chain and sprocket set on 1290.😊

I agree with Shane’s comments below! All your maintenance and/or “how to” videos are nicely filmed with good commentary that relates and explains pertinent maintenance aspects for the task at hand. Most other folks videos of this type, I must turn volume completely off! As the video commentary is either annoying, off-topic and/or either contradictory or at least confusing as you correlate what you see what what you are hearing! And you always name the tool and fastener sizes which is most helpful! I ‘ve not seen another video maker that consistently describes the tools and fasteners/torque etc., the degree detail that you do! Thanks again Mario! Keep having fun!

Much appreciated! This is a job that it's very difficult but has some critical steps that I want to make sure people understand. Like you, I've seen plenty of "how to" videos that just suck; from guys not knowing the names of tools, or parts to just providing bad/wrong information. The job takes me 2-3 times longer to do when filming because I try to explain things as clearly as possible. Glad to hear people can learn from them.

For front sprocket access , after swing arm bolt pushed back, I used a floor jack to lift the chain side swing arm upward just a little pressure and it held it clear.

If I’m getting rid of the old chain, just cut it off with a cutoff wheel. But I work flat rate:) also I crack front sprocket nut loose before taking off chain.

Not too many tricks, freeze bearings, heat the hub when needed and have the right tools. If/when I replace them, I'll make a video on it. To date, I've only had to replace bearings on some of the dirt bikes.

Great video, I changed mine yesterday on my 2019 1289 Super Adventure S, I have a question though. I found my splines on the counter shaft partly worn and the old sprocket had movement. The new sprocket still has a little movement on the splines although it is ok with the nut tightened up. Im confused as to why the splines on the shaft have wear as I have had the bike since new and this is the first replacement in which Im using genuine parts. Wondered if you have came across this before? Cheers

Great video thanks. I thought I'd done well getting 22000 miles out if my chain and sprockets, I could have probably squeezed a bit longer but quite a few tight spots now and I have a big trip planned in a few weeks. Not sure if I'll need a new chain slider. What's your chain maintenance routine as your getting good life form your chain and sprockets. 👍

Clean it when it gets dirty. Lube it after cleaning or after it gets wet. That’s it. Too many people use too much live which just attracts more dirt and wears them out faster.

Like I showed in the video, the ridge of the sprocket holds the bolt head so they can’t spin.

It is better to losen the sprocket nut with the chain still attached and the bike in neutral, just step on the brake. That way you don't stress the transmission being in gear

It's somewhat of a problem on all keyfob bikes. Fortunately, all of my KTMs (1290, 990 and 890) are all key operated.

Great job on the video as usual! I have a bit to go yet befor it is chain time on my 1190R. Having a nice clear video of yours is going to make that job easy. As my bike is the R model and I wouldn't mind a little lower gearing for off road, what is your thoughts on a smaller front sprocket. Some guys say it puts to much on the chain slider and wears it out to quickly. What is your thought? Thanks for another great video. 👍

Thanks Jeff. I see how it could wear it out faster as it would (in theory) have a little more pressure on the front due to the smaller sprocket size. As long as the chain is properly adjusted; I'd probably runner it to the looser spec, I don't it would wear it much faster.

Hi Mario, I don't understand why you have to remove the bolt on the swing arm, I have changed my chain guard and the front sprocket without removing this bolt . My bike is a 2015 1290 SAT , it's strange no ? 🤔

Again, depends on each bike. Some I’ve worked on have the clearance while some don’t. Guess it comes down to the tolerances at the factory. I’ve had some close ups of mine on the previous video where you can clearly see it ain’t coming off without some shimmying of the swing arm.

Do you think the front sprocket can be removed by just removing the slave cylinder, the chain saver, and the swing arm bolt pushed back? Without removing the chain completely? (2015 ktm super adv stock sprocket) EDIT. For those who are wondering I did this today after posting the question, and it worked without removing the chain. You will have to remove the slave cylinder, and the chain saver as well as the little plastic piece that goes on the clutch push rod. I slid the rear axle out enough to pop the chain adjusters out, and slid the rear will forward enough to remove the chain. Saves the trouble of removing a link. Win.

Thanks for realy good video, just sold my Z1000 and got me a KTM 1090 -18, which need a new back tire and clean up. Just a short question, when you remove the slave cylinder you say that "don´t pull in your clutch levert", could you explain why, and what would hapend if? BR/Andreas

Because it will depress the slave cylinder. Then you’ll have to bleed it.

Hi I would like to clean the front sprocket cover in my 1290 sas from 2020, my question is: are there only 2 fixing screws there? Next to it there is a mechanism from the clutch and do I have to disassemble it too? I wouldn't want to broken anything.

There are only 2 screws to remove the front sprocket guard. No need to remove the slave cylinder unless you're wanting to remove the front sprocket.

I adjusted my chain and it is new but it makes a lot of slapping noise and is that normal on a 2022 1290 SAR? It has done it since it was new. I hear some complaints on these bikes for slapping noise from these KTM Super Adventure motorcycles.

If properly adjusted it shouldn't be making any slapping noise. I haven't messed with the new 2022 SAR much yet but Tyler's got some miles on his and hasn't experienced that. Brian experienced it on his 2020 1290 SAR but turns out it was just out of adjustment.

Ordered the OEM sprockets and chain. Question, the new chain came in one piece with no master. Is this normal ? I'll have to break the chain and order a master to install it.

I ordered the same kit for my 16 1290 sat. chain came in 1 piece. I had to drop the swingarm out to install. That was fun.

Taking off the slave cylinder, loosening the swing arm, and taking off metal upper sprocket guard are all completely unnecessary steps to change either the front sprocket or the chain sliders.

@@2WR Maybe those that have had larger countershaft sprockets from stock (though usually people reduce, not increase, the size of the countershaft sprocket). I just removed my 990 16T sprocket and it was easy, but early 990/950's came with 17T before KTM changed to 16T, so maybe those and some 1090/1190/1290 bikes interfere. I know your video isn't about 990's but I was surprised how easy the supposedly 100 Nm countershaft sprocket nut came off. It's almost hand tight or at least took very little force/impact to loosen it......couldn't have been any Loktite 243 on it which the manual requires along with 100 Nm. I bought the bike new and never loosened that nut before now so good thing it had the bent-tab washer. Have you found the same on your 990 I see in the background? I put the rear axle shorty wrench on the countershaft nut and rested the handle on top of the swingarm pivot before rotating the rear tire CW or backwards. It didn't take much at all and the nut was spinning relative to the countershaft.
