Watch this moving KTVN CBS/ 2 News Nevada story by Anchor Josh Meny about the new “Symphony of the Holocaust” documentary screening at the Northern Nevada Jewish Film Festival at the National Automobile Museum in Reno, Nevada, on May 5, 2024. Emmy Award-Winning Director Greg DeHart was this event and Q and A with Executive Producer and Sunn Stream President Garrett Sutton.
DeHart explains, “The film is about taking something horrible and making something beautiful from it.” He adds that it’s also a tale of survival about a child violin prodigy Shony Alex Braun, who was taken with his family at age 13 to Auschwitz. While his mother and sister were tragically murdered there, Shony miraculously survived 4 concentration camps.
After WWII, Josh explains that Shony moved to Los Angeles and became a world renowned composer who played for Kings, Queens and Presidents. Most of his 15-minute symphony was composed in his mind while being held captive in the camps.
Josh adds that Shony’s dream was to perform his symphony in front of the infamous Auschwitz gates to bring some beauty to a horrific place. Shony sadly passed in 2002 before fulling this dream. In this film, Shony’s symphony is performed on Braun’s violin by Armenian Violinist Erik Ghukasyan for his family at Auschwitz in 2023.
This film screening was hosted by Jewish Nevada and Temple Emanu-El.
