I'm a Malaysian Muslim from Sabah and given that my older sister lives near the Batu Caves commuter station since 2013, I would just walk all the way from her condominium complex to the commuter station instead of relying on her free time to use the car, if ever I had the chance to visit her on my very own someday!

The main reason many malaysian including my family in Malaysia still using their own transport (cars/bikes) is that most of us bought a house/apartment further away from the city due to increasing price of housing in most of the city. Most of the housing area is new and still without proper public transport. And also it's easier and safer to use your own car to send your kids to school and then stratight to work.

I'm born and bred in KL and I love the transportation system here. Been using them since high school. I do hope however the train system could be extended to other states as well and not just focused on KL & Klang Valley. At least cover the whole of Selangor (or that was probably what the earlier Prime Minister tried to do when he introduced the MRT) Penang needs an efficient LRT system too. Well, I think the Chan Sow Lin station is even closer than ampang. And there is the new line to putrajaya (access to KLIA Transit) and Kwasara Damansara. For me is obvious, the MRT is a copy of the London tube, just not completed yet. The so important circle line is planned to open in 2030 and then there will be the MRT station next to M City. This will hopefully be the breaktrough. However, the road traffic is much better than in London and they do a lot to improve, what is also great. This city needs both, RTS and road. Especially the east klang valley expressway that will hopefully complete in 2024 and reduces travel time from M-City to airport to just under 30 min. So, even though not complete yet, the gradual improvement of both, rail and road is promissing.

You really does enjoyed our public transport system in Kuala Lumpur. I do reckon that Malaysia public transportation system is improving gradually, as a railway fan I do noticed the operators tried their best to provide the service in safe and timely manner. However, regarding the question on why not all Malaysians taking public transport, there are reasons such as the city design of entire Malaysia are designed for car mobility only, I am living in surburb of KL, even though there are some commercial areas opposite my residence there are no way to walk across the road of 10 lanes. In Malaysia, the pedestrian are often neglected when the local council are expanding the roads to cater for more vehicles, and even if there are pedestrian sidewalks oftentime they are occupied by hawkers, or motorcycles (back in 2019, in front of KLCC Twin Tower I almost got hit by a motorcycle riding on top of the pedestrian sidewalk oh lord). And sidewalks don't even properly designed to allow continuous access (most sidewalks ended unexpectedly) and let's don't forget about disabled people they unable to use the pedestrian sidewalks at all. Kuala Lumpur used to have plans for more bus lanes however the plan got axed, it is quite a pity when my bus service often arrive late due to the traffic congestion and sometimes bus bunching with each other. Plus there are no sidewalks (only grass, small gap between the highway crash barriers and big sized ditch) from the bus stop which is just a pole, not even a shelter, walking back to my home after bus is like jungle trekking. Good side on riding public transport for Malaysians. there are transit passes such as My50 Monthly Pass, MyCityPass 1/3 Days Pass. Most of the locals don't even know the 1 day pass of MyCityPass is only cost RM5 to ride the entire rail network in a single day. They are trying their best to attract people to use public transit. But there are more places aside than Kuala Lumpur city center, need to have better infrastructure for people to use public transit. Otherwise people will just drive. Anyway thank you for sharing sir. I really love your style of storytelling. Cheers.

I don't believe that Malaysian actually think that public transport is for poor people. However, they love their cars too much, just like Americans, I think. The main reason is that they are lazy to walk, so unless the station is right in front of their houses, it is quite hard to convince them. I have been using public transport for more than 5 years and I hardly use my car anymore. It is just dumb to spend so much time in kl traffic when you are driving. I think the Malaysian attitude towards public transport has started changing. I see more and more people especially the young ones using the trains and busses.

My dream would be to live on a high floor in a soho high-ceiling apartment tastefully decorated, and a piano to play next to a million dollar view of the city. Hi Andrew - I lived on Ampang in KL for a couple years while I was teaching English for the UNHCR. I used public transit including the all-Indian buses that ply Ampang. Overall it was a good experience AND I was always the ONLY westerner on the system. KL is choking on its traffic bc there isn't a culture of using public transit - and in previous years what transit there was, was inadequate. So, most people weren't covered by the system. But that's changing and maybe the Malaysian people will change with it? To be seen. I'll look you up next time I'm in KL and we can go out for a drink and compare notes. In the end I moved back to the States when I met my husband-to-be in KL and he came to the US and we got married. The rest is history! Enjoy your time. We enjoy watching your videos as it reminds me of that time in my life there, full of adventure. (I wrote a book about it. Will send another time!)

To me as Malaysian living the suburb of KL I think we're still a long way from an ideal public transport system. It can be quite a hassle to access the metro and move about in areas not served by the system. That's why private cars are still the main mode of transportation for most of Malaysians.

It is still like what they say, I still prefer cars and that includes grab (though a bit expensive) as it can take a long time to get to point B from point A even if the public transport such as lrt etc serve them. Take for instance from tmn melati where I live (lrt) to get to one utama (lrt/MRT) takes me 90mins-2hrs when by car it is just 20mins-45mins

If you are traveling alone, it make sense to use public transport. But if you are traveling as a family and you need to go to multiple location, it is CHEAPER and FASTER to drive your own vehicle.

Even as local, sometimes i would take train with my friend and enjoy walking around old downtown area and enjoying the scenery like u did n go to some restaurant or cafe. Very relaxing and of course i really enjoy walking around n taking photo. And i dont have to worry about finding parking space or get stuck in the traffic or paying expensive parking rate at some strategic places.

Not bad been waiting for this video, I have to watch a couple times to understand where you are going but I will give it a go. The Go KL bus is a great service i have built up the courage to use a few times now and yes it gets very crowded especially late arvo when everybody finished work. As for the quirky bar yes great but the F*&^^n smokers, just hate it.( yes I understand they are allowed to and its their choice) Most restaurants in Malaysia (or Asia) do not have a dedicated smoking area so makes it difficult for me to enjoy. I go to restaurants inside shopping centres so I can enjoy a meal but miss out a lot of good places sadly. Another great video Thank you.🙏👍

Actually it is now illegal to smoke in restaurants & I believe 6 feet from it but not sure about pubs. So I can legally tell someone off for smoking when I see one! Actually most people are aware of the law & will abide as they can be fined & so will the proprietor for allowing smoking

Singapore is very good, although they use old noisy and stinky diesel busses. The high density of trains and busses is very good and also frequency is high. KL has low density and stations are sometimes in awkward inconvenient locations. Bangkok is also ahead of KL. Both KL and Bangkok are working on hard-needed expansion. In the rest of Asia it there are many excellent examples, including the major cities in Japan, China, HK, Taiwan, Korea. It will take many decades before KL has such rapid transport, if ever.

There's a lots of reason..Spore to own a car is very expensive & lots of restriction..while Bangkok too congested with the traffic jam,people..that's why they prefer to use public transport.....
@zzzowie

@@amz8172 I agree with the reasons, and Sgp is smart in that way; more countries should impose higher tax on motorized vehicles. I would also make the tax strongly related to how much pollution a vehicle causes. In Bangkok the BTS and MRT are relative expensive for many people, which makes that part of the population going for small motorbikes or bus.

Most Asian countries are doing very bad when it comes to dedicated bicycle lanes. Bicycles (electric or not) are a much cleaner way of transport, but it only works really well if bicycle lanes are mostly physically separated and dedicated to bicycles alone and people use them properly as in The Netherlands.

Thanks for the video Andrew. Many KLites complained about last mile connectivity and thats why they use cars. Many have forgotten before these post modern form of public Transport, we had to use the Mini Buses and Big Busses with no air condition to travel to work from one end of Klang valley to the other . The Buses were so packed during rush hour the we hung our selves at the door of the mini bus travelling at F1 speed in a traffic jam. The only way to make people use public transport is to make car parking prohibitively expensive. Then people will start to pack in the trains like sardines . Comfort? in Tokyo the attendants will push you in. No comfort there. So KLites start using Public Transport please.
