Air check of Robert W. Walker on KUDL-AM in Kansas City, recorded Thursday, May 7, 1970.
There were two Robert W. Walkers who worked as air talent at KUDL. The first, known today as Rob Walker, is not the one heard on this air check. This air check is of the second Robert W. Walker, who had previously worked under the air name of Peter Woolf when he was on the air in California prior to joining the air staff at KUDL in Kansas City.
KUDL was a top 40 radio station and at the time of this air check, Robert W. Walker was the station's afternoon drive disc jockey. On this particular day, the regular afternoon newsman was on assignment, and I had to fill in reading the news. This was back in the very early days of my career (I was still a high school senior at the time), and as will be embarrassingly evident in some of the language used in the news copy I was reading that day, we lived in a world that had not yet awakened to the kind of political correctness that we all take for granted today. And I just read the wire copy as it came across the Associated Press (AP) and United Press International (UPI) wires. Rewrite? Oh, that was for actual newsmen. I was just a disc jockey filling in for a newsman. And if there is anything that sounds more pathetic than a pimply-faced 17 year old hippie wannabe trying to sound authoritative, I have yet to hear it. The good news is, as a broadcaster, I got better after this. LOL!
