@Zombified Pariah agreed!! I liked the third but I wish it had kept with the slightly darker tone of the second movie. It felt more like a step back than a step forward. It also made the reunion with the other pandas and his father less emotional when in the second movie it actually recognized the trauma of it all more? Idk. I didn't mind the brightness or how colorful, and I loved the ending with the dragon, and the idea that the pandas were chi masters. I just didn't like that they were also ALL jokes.

One thing I think is cool about the soothsayer’s prophecy is that it came true, but not in the way everyone thinks. She said Shen is defeated by a warrior of black and white. Shen’s own weapon ends up killing him in the end, which means Shen (a warrior of black and white) defeats himself. It also ties in to Oogway’s quote in the first movie: “one often meets his destiny on the road to avoid it.” When Shen heard his destiny, he actively sought to save it by killing all the pandas. By doing this, he creates Po because Po wouldn’t have met the furious five if his mother hadn’t put him in the radish basket. Just food for thought. I love this movie 😁
@DefinetelyNotAnAlien
3 жыл бұрын
An interesting thing is also that it can be seen in multiple ways. As you said, in the way that Shen, stained in ashes, turns into a black and white warrior, defeating himself, but also Po being literally black and white - but he also represents the ying and yang symbol while he skadooshes Shen, meaning that the warrior meant to defeat him could have been anyone who found inner peace/inner balance. Imo all of those play together, as everything that happened was the result of what Shen did, playing into the hands of his destiny. It's really such a complex movie that gives so much food for thought.

Giant Pandas are endangered yes, but like on the highest rung of rarity. South China Tigers, which is what Tigress is, are almost extinct in the wild, considering their territory is tiny, even smaller than panda territory. They're also the smallest tiger species in mainland Asia. And their genetics makes their skull so much differently shaped than other species of tiger, and their coat is more yellow than orange, which probably doesn't help to blend in. It was just a lucky thing that she survived to adulthood, I guess.

Oh, hurray! You watched Kung Fu Panda 2! It was super fun to see you reacting to Po's past and Shen as a character. Shen, while perhaps not outrightly as intimidating as Tai Lung (and arguably not as sympathetic) was still such a fun, complex villain. You loved to hate him, especially once you realize what he did to Po and his people. How his arrogance and greed led to the genocide of an innocent people. But then you see other facets of him that remind you that he's not doing this just for fun. Shen is a son scorned, believing he'd been wronged by the parents he loved - and who loved him - and stripped of his birthright. And this belief of being hated has fueled a bitter want to "take happiness" for himself when deep down he knows that what he wants - the conquering of China - will never fill the emptiness in his heart. The Soothsayer tells him as much. In fact, the Soothsayer helps to provide not only witty comic relief but an opportunity for the audience to see Shen's more humane side (however small it is). The Soothsayer was more than just a teller of fortunes. To Shen, she was his nanny. And you can see when he dealt with her, he'd get annoyed by her antics but never harmed her. There was still a fondness there for her. And she saw that. Which was why she did her best to persuade the wayward prince from following his destructive path. Shen, to his credit, let her free when he no longer needed her. He could have easily killed her. But he didn't. This was also a turning point for him. He was letting go of the last bit of humanity and walking into the darkness. His fate foretold was truly sealed. On another note, I like to think Shen truly realized he had lost - and that all his efforts had been in vain - during the scene where he surveyed the wreckage of his ships and his canons. There was nothing left for him. He had nothing. Which I suppose was why he willingly let himself get crushed by his falling canon. He could have technically moved out of the way. But why would he? What did he have left if he survived this? Might as well go on his own terms, believing that even his death was his own choice. I'm probably overthinking this, haha. But I'm really glad you enjoyed this movie! I'm looking forward to all the others you'll watch!

Patiently waiting for this for a week squad 😎 And what I really love about these movies are how both Tai Lung and Shen are shown to be tragic villains at their core. Tai Lung feeling like his life dedication, the dream that was hammered into his head, being taken away from him, thinking that he was robbed of the destiny he desired, feeling betrayed by his adopted father. And while Shen is irredeemable, imo he was perfectly written because he is just as broken as Tai Lung, being deeply insecure and paranoid, convinced that his parents never loved him while still trying to prove himself to them as he desperately desires their love, becoming more and more unstable and losing his sanity in the process. And the way the movie showed that Shen knew that he could not turn back now is brilliant (when the Soothsayer pleads for him to stop "this madness" he agrees that it is indeed madness but asks her why he should; he probably would have attacked everyone else saying his goals are crazy but not with her & the last scene on the boat with Po and when he just closes his eyes and accepts death). Tbh I can't believe that two of the best movies I have ever seen are about a panda doing kung fu but here we are. 😆

Shen is pretty obviously a monsterous, horrible person. He’s a murderous conquering warlord after all. But it may not have been the only way out. People have redeemed themselves from worse, and while we all know how his story ended, the way in which he in his last second alive accepted his death... if he had a different story, If he was able to accept and realize his crimes fully, heck if he never ended up committing them in the first place... it didn’t necessarily have to end this way. But of course, it did. Shen took the path of war, and in the end, war took him.

22:13 It's not just death, it's *genocide*. This is one of Dreamworks's darkest movies, second only to "Prince of Egypt"... which also dealt with genocide (technically twice) as well as slavery.

Honestly the best Dream Work movie (animation, music, story, movie message, characters and great villain) and personaly I think Lord Shen is one of the greatest movie villains of all time, at least the best animated movie villain. Shen was just full psycho who genocided pandas but yet he is still comedic villain + I love his fighting style (he reminds me Count Dooku from Star Wars- both have very elegant, powerful, quick and deadly fighting style that looks like dance). So yes this is 100% the best one in Kung Fu Panda trilogy.

Imagine waiting 5 years to see what happens after that cliffhanger. And we still haven't gotten the 4th movie 6 years after number 3.
