Japan episode 21:
Today, discovering and exploring the beautiful island of Ōkunoshima, also known as Rabbit Island. This small island is located near the town of Takehara in Hiroshima Prefecture, Japan. Although its past is marked by dark events, being formerly a site for the production of toxic gas, including mustard gas, between 1920 and 1945, it has transformed into a peaceful haven where humans and rabbits coexist harmoniously today.
The hotel where I am staying in Ōkunoshima: Kyukamura ōkunoshima
(available on booking.com for reservations)
⚠️ ESSENTIAL INFORMATION: To get to Rabbit Island from Osaka, here are the steps to follow:
1. Go to Shin-Osaka train station and buy your ticket for the complete Osaka-Tadanoumi journey (the nearest station to Rabbit Island) at the ticket counter. Opt for non-reserved seats, which are self-seating. Expect to pay around 8,530 yen, or about 55 euros.
2. Take the Shinkansen from Shin-Osaka station to Fukuyama 🚄.
3. Then, take a local train from Fukuyama to Mihara station 🚞.
4. From Mihara station, take another local train to Tadanoumi station 🚂.
5. At Tadanoumi station, exit and walk about 8 minutes to the small souvenir shop where you can buy a ticket for the ferry to Ōkunoshima (Rabbit Island). The round-trip ticket price is about 720 yen, or about 4.60 € (the return ticket is valid for the next day if you decide to stay overnight 😉) 🚢.
6. Get special rabbit food (pellets) either at the souvenir shop or at the nearby small restaurant run by a grandmother who also sells them. The pellets are about 100 yen cheaper at the grandmother's than at the souvenir shop (200 yen for a small pack at the souvenir shop, and 100 yen at the grandmother's).
7. Enjoy your visit 😉🐰.
