Pench National Park is located in the heart of India- Madhya Pradesh and covers a total area of 758 sq.km. It is located on the southern part of Madhya Pradesh, to be specific, in the districts of Seoni and Chhindwara, which also shares a boundary with Maharashtra. An additional area of 257 sq.km of this park lies in Maharashtra but is also accessible from Madhya Pradesh. A treasure of rich flora and fauna, this national park has its area segregated in two divisions- a) Priyadarshini National Park and Mowgli Pench Sanctuary which covers an area of 299 sq.km and b) 464 sq.km which is considered as the buffer area. The national park is named after the river- Pench, which while flowing from north to south, divides the national park in almost equal halves namely eastern and western halves.
At a distance of 35 km from Turiya, Rukhad is the buffer zone of Pench National Park. The entry gate of this zone is situated at Rukhad village on NH - 44.
This zone is also known as Bison Sanctuary or Bison Retreat. The zone houses beautiful dense forest and recommended for forest lovers who flock here in search of beauty, respite, and solitude. Though the density of animals is less, one can enjoy the beautiful forest along with a mesmerizing sunset from the top of Korai Garh during your safari in this zone of Pench. The zone carries various species of flowers and trees.
Recently (After Jul 2021) we have seen tremendous tiger sighting news of Rukhad buffer on Facebook and in the news channels. So we were also thinking of going there. Meantime our best friends Mangesh and Kunal oraganized the trip, myself and Kumar also joined. Kunal has some good relationships with top executives in the ministry, basis on that we stayed in the Forest Guest House inside the park.
In our first safari we spotted the leopard sleeping on the branch of a tree, looks like he had very heavy meal. In our second safari Mangesh spotted a leopard sitting very close to the road and trying to cross the road. We spent some time with him and took some beautiful pictures even though the light was not in our favor. We spotted a female tigress in our third safari, sitting behind the bamboo thicket. Hence it become difficult to take good snaps.
We came here to spot two famous males of this area Kingfisher and Kuraigadh. But till now there was no signs of the them and no one spotted them after Friday morning safari, so in a nutshell, we had three dry safaris. We were optimistic about our fourth and last safari. We entered the park, around 6am. After around 45-60 minutes, we came to know that Kuraigadh male was on the move. We were far away from where he spotted. So we tried to reach the spot ASAP. After reaching the spot, we saw around 10-15 jeeps on the road, after some time some more jeeps came in. This time he was walking in the woods and through thickets instead of on the road. We tracked and loosed him around 4-5 times. We spent around one and half hour in tracking him and sometime he also came on the road to mark his territory and this gave us good amount of time to shoot our most memorable sighting.
