One of the best things about traveling are the people you meet along the way. We met Joe and Trish while staying in Cairns and instantly hit it off - must be something about Isuzu Trucks. They offered a location in Kurrimine Beach for us to stay while down that way.
We were there twice - either side of Christmas and the contrast in weather was incredible. The first very short stay was typical hot and sunny North Queensland weather - perfect. For 12 months we've hardly seen any rain, however it started instantly on our way up the second stay - again typical North Queensland weather. Incredible to see over 250 mm of constant rain fall within a couple of days !
At times Kurrimine Beach could also be mistaken for Radiator Springs (Pixar Movie Cars), as it seemed every second house had an old tractor driving up and down the streets that was used to launch and retrieve boats.
A highlight of the stay was a trip across to Dunk Island where we spent time at during our Honeymoon a number of years back. We remembered it as a perfect Tropical Island Resort. Unfortunately now the Resort still remains closed while repairs to the damage caused by Cyclone Yasi (2011) continue, but there are small sections of the Island opened to explore around.
Kurrimine Beach is one of the closest beaches to the Great Barrier Reef, with King Reef just a km or so away. On certain days during the month at low tide you can actually walk out to explore it. Was amazing to take the boat out a few times to look around. Didn't do any good fishing out there for us though, but plenty of stuff to see.
