Very helpful. Thank you! For videoconferencing, is it necessary to use the headset, or can the built-in mics and speakers of the laptops and monitor be used with the dual system setup? I've been readily able to videoconference using the built-in functionality when working with each laptop as a single system. Just wondering if anything in the dual setup using the KVM switch upsets the balance to where a headset is recommended (or in the video, were you relying on the webcam's mic for sound input?).

You can use the built-in mics and speakers of the laptops. We used a headset just to showcase how a headset would be used... and to point out that it has to be an RF headset (not Bluetooth).

Thank you. No, you can have them clamshelled (closed) but make sure you run power to them so they don't go to sleep. Some machines might need to have their power settings adjusted but most likely it'll work out of the box.

Thanks for the video Justin, excellent presentation. I just purchased an Imac, and have a HP Laptop (Work). I also have an external monitor that I would like to use for the work laptop display. How would you use the KVM system to hook that up so that I can switch between the imac and work PC? Thanks again
@avicotech-us
3 жыл бұрын
It should be very similar to the setup in this video. Just get the right connector for the iMac (likely USB-C to HDMI) and then your laptop will probably have a standard HDMI output. All of the concepts would be the same as in this video, you just might need different connection cables based on your iMac and HP Laptop (work) connections. If you need help, open a ticket on buytesmart.com with the orange support button in the lower right hand of the page.

@avicotech-us

With a single monitor KVM, you can only toggle between the 2 PC's. You cannot split the screen with a single monitor KVM. Other KVM's have that feature but they are many times more expensive than TESmart KVM's.

Yea, we use it similarly with a laptop that we use tethered while taking pictures, transfer the files to our centralized storage, and then switch over to a powerful desktop to do graphics work. As far as older computers go, Window's-based PC's will not be an issue. Some older Macs (like pre-2014) can sometimes present some issues with MacOS using the wrong color space but we rarely run into this issue.

I intend to use the screen in "mirror mode" the S22 smartphone and "extended mode" the laptop. The S22 has a single USB-C port and the laptop has an HDMI, VGA, and USB 3.0/USB 2.0 ports. Hi mate, nice video. I have a question. I want to run my Imac and my PC laptop with a similar set up but not really for zoom, but I still use it often. I am a sound designer and I use both computers for different purposes. The thing is, I have an external soundcard (focusrite scarlette 2i2) that is plug to only one computer at the time, so I have to unplug and plug the soundcard each time I switch computers. Basically my question is if I do the same set up as you do, this won't affect the audio ? What I'm thinking is to get a second soundcard, so both computers will always be always plug for the audio independently, but I will just have to press the switch button and will have screens switched with mouse and keyboard, between my two computers but this won't affect the audio, yeah ? If KVM Switch Dual Monitor won't affect my audio which definitely need to be run with an external soundcard I will buy it.
@avicotech-us
3 жыл бұрын
An external sound card receives data and then converts that data to audio and then sends the audio out to another target (speakers, recorder, etc.). Obviously it also goes the opposite way if you're recording. If your external soundcard uses USB, there should be no difference between the KVM being in the middle of the connection string because the KVM merely passes along the USB data from one device to another. (The KVM doesn't have an effect the data.) I think you should be good. The only hiccup might be how well your computers register the USB audio card. If you are switching back and forth constantly I would go with 2 different sound cards. If you mostly use one machine at a time, it should be ok to share the soundcard with the KVM.

Very great product and video! Before I get mine, I have to know something. My situation is that I have a pc for casual use and another one just for my programming and video editing. I'd like to be on one pc and still have access to the files of the other one. Is that possible natively or do I need an external hard drive directly connected to the KVM switch that I would use as a shared database ?
@avicotech-us
2 жыл бұрын
The best way to do this is to Share or Network your computers. The KVM keeps both computers completely separate (this is good for security reasons) so you can't share files across the KVM. As you noted, you can dump onto an external drive and then pull off on the other computer but networking/sharing the drives on each computer will be faster and more efficient because you won't have to switch back and forth.

This is was so useful, thanks! Now, what if I have 3 or 4 monitors setup to my desktop and want to share them with a 2nd desktop?
@avicotech-us
2 жыл бұрын
For more monitors, you either need more KVM's or a KVM that can do 3 to 4 monitors. TESmart has only single and dual monitor KVM's but you can "hack" a setup by using multiple single monitor KVM's. What's important to consider (for any KVM with HDMI) is that you are going to need 1 video connection for each monitor. So if you have a triple KVM, you will need 3 video connections from each computer. This is because HDMI cannot be split and extended.

Great video. Couldn't you plug the C920 directly into the KVM box? Would it also recognize the c920s mics that way? Or is the hub required? I also run bookshelf speakers with 1/8 plug. Assuming I could plug into the L/R port on front? Thanks!
@avicotech-us
2 жыл бұрын
Yea, if you have only 1 standard USB device, you can go straight into the KVM. The point of the hub is that it needs to be powered if you are using multiple devices because the KVM doesn't provide enough power for multiple USB's plugged into an unpowered hub. And yea... plug the speakers into the front L/R port and select the correct audio output on your OS (usually comes up as the name of your monitor).

@avicotech-us
3 жыл бұрын
Yea, this is the type of KVM you'll want. If you're going to switch just the middle monitor, then go with the buytesmart.com/hks212 that you see on this video. Since your computers should have HDMI outputs already, it should be really easy to setup (easier than what is shown in the video). You'll run a connection direct from the computer to 1 non-shared monitor and then a connection to the KVM for that shared monitor so you can switch back and forth.

Hi Carolyn, the KVM's hotkey commands are set on the dedicated keyboard and mouse port (has a keyboard and mouse logo) if you try using the hotkey commands on the USB 2.0 port on the back of the KVM it won't work. Since the KVM only has one USB 2.0 port the USB Hub comes handy when you want to use multiple peripherals.

No, it doesn't. We actually have not tested monitors with built in KVM's. They are pretty rare. If I had to guess, I'd assume they do not have hotkey triggers since that requires emulation programming. Also, not sure how they would work with a USB hub to connect other devices that get used to switch between computers (like the webcam and headset in this video).

I also received a new laptop from work which has a Thunderbolt and a mini displayport (but no HDMI). 1. What is the max resolution for the monitor that this switch will support? Can it support 3440x1440 @60Hz? 2. Will it support ultrawide monitors? I think yes, since the monitor in the video seems to be ultrawide 3. Would you recommend using a Thunderbolt to HDMI or mini displayport to HDMI convertor cable to connect the laptop to the KVM switch?
@avicotech-us

1) Yes - the native resolution of the monitor is this video is 3440x1440@60hz 2) Yep, same as #1 3) TB to HDMI but make sure to pick the adapters from our list. Not all adapters work in KVM environments: buytesmart.com/adapters

@avicotech-us

Currently the K70 will conflict with the KVM's emulated mouse & keyboard ports. R&D is working on a firmware update to fix this. Until that is released you can use a powered USB hub that is plugged into the KVM's USB2.0 port. Here's a link for the powered hub that we used in the video: amzn.to/3mLWU0W

I could use your advice. I currently use 2 MacBooks (one personal, one work). I'm purchasing a 3rd (Alienware) at mid-year to accommodate my Unreal Engine production later this year. I'm planning my setup and am thinking of the following three options: 1. One 34" monitor for all 3 (until I can afford a 49") 2. Adding a 2nd 32" monitor for the Alienware and just using the 34" for the MacBooks 3. Getting two 32" monitors for 3 laptops. Which KVM should I consider that would give me display ports for 3 laptops and 2 monitors? I think I know which one is best for 2 laptops and 2 monitors.

You will need this model: buytesmart.com/products/dual-monitor-kvm-switch-4-hdmi-pcs-2-hdmi-monitors-updated-4k-60hz. It's generally better go with HDMI unless all of the components are capable of doing DisplayPort. (It's easier to convert from DP to HDMI than from HDMI to DP.)

For work, I have a Lenovo ThinkPad USB-C Gen2 docking station that I use for my smaller monitor. I want to run an additional HDMI from it into my larger monitor I currently have dedicated to my personal HP laptop. I plan to use the KVM 2x1 to be able to switch this large monitor input between the work and personal laptop. Will this HVM product for this application? Hoping I explained it well enough.
@avicotech-us
3 жыл бұрын
If I understand you correctly this will work. You want the "smaller monitor" dedicated to just the Thinkpad and then use the "larger monitor" between your work and personal computers. This is a similar setup as how many people use their laptop as a dedicated screen and share a larger monitor between 2 computers (like what we showed in this video).

Thank you, this is exactly what I needed. Will it be possible to keep the laptop shut when I am using the monitor? Does the switch have wifi or does the set up still use laptop wifi?

Yea, you can close the laptop. Windows are easier to do this than Macs though. The switch does not have wifi or ethernet so you'll still need to connect both laptops to their own wifi/ethernet connections.

Hi BuyTesMart, what is the best KVM device to use for the new 27" Apple Studio Display 5K monitor? My setup would be with a MacBook Air 2019 and MacBook Pro 2021 with a single 27" Apple Studio Display 5K monitor once I receive it? Also Magic Mouse (wireless), Trackpad "wireless" and Magic Keyboard (wireless) Thank you in advance.

Not sure a KVM is going to work for you. The new display is Type-C video input. KVM's haven't caught up to that level of display yet. At lest, not TESmart KVM's.

Hi. Great video. I wanted to ask if there is anyway to use the TEsmart kvm 2x1 switch for a 1 monitor and 2 laptop setup, while the laptop lids are closed?? That’s reason I invested in one to be able to work on my MacBook and my HP computer only curve monitor while the laptops are put away to save space on my desk. They only work on the monitor if the lids are open, which to me defeats the purpose of the kvm if the laptops just stay open in order for me to use it. I really need help in this as I’ve been trying to figure it out. Thanks in advance for your response. (And for reference I have the KVM that uses an HDMI)

Hi Sabin, the KVM will give video output with the computers lids closed, you will have to change the lid settings on your computers, look for 'Change what closing the lid does' on the search box, and select 'Do nothing', now you will be able to use to computers through the KVM with the lids closed.

Thank you for this! I'm fumbling my way trying to make a WFH situation and I think I'll be able to use a KVM switch. Can you help/confirm? Tech isn't my strong suit. I have a work laptop and home laptop. Old monitor (I will purchase a new one this week), wireless keyboard and mouse. Both are PCs. I've been switching back and forth but would ike this KVM switch to work and allow me to switch back and forth easier. It looks like this will work for me but want to be sure. You mention this is Mac and PC, so I want to be sure this is ok for 2 PCs. Also, is there a specific model switch or is there only one I should get? Thanks in advance.

I would like to have my pc with a display port and my macbook hooked up to one of these. Do you have an option for a DP and HDMI?
@avicotech-us
3 жыл бұрын
You should go with a video type that your monitor has and adapt into the KVM to make them all the same video protocol. So for instance, if your monitor has HDMI, then you would adapt your PC with this DisplayPort to HDMI adapter: amzn.to/2G627RU. And then you would connect direct HDMI to your monitor. Alternatively, if you went with a DisplayPort KVM, you could go direct DisplayPort to the monitor from the KVM but then you would have to adapt any HDMI computers going into the KVM. Adapting from HDMI to DP is less common (and more expensive) then adapting from DP to HDMI.

I need to use a few laptops (win 11 and Chromebooks) on one laptop (Chromebook), using the one's keyboard and screen for it and the others. Tried using Chrome Remote Desktop between two Chromebooks, but that gives annoyingly blurry text. Besides that, although you can save connection settings for a Windows computer, I see no option to save the connection settings for another Chromebook -- have to enter a 12-digit code each time. My productivity could really get a boost with a suitable solution! As then I could spread a great workload and resource usage over a few laptops while facing just one.

So, i'm looking to get my office setup... currently I have a Mac (my personal and business) and an HP (employer). The HP is an older model and doesn't have an HDMI port, so I used a converter VGA to HDMI. I have two monitors as well, one of my monitors has a VGA outlet, but I also used a converter so that everything can be the same. I purchased another KVM, but it was not picking up the HP. I can change the setup to one monitor if needed, but most importantly, I want to be able to toggle between two machines with one mouse and keyboard. Would this work even if one of cpu's has a vga?

Most likely you have the wrong adapter. HDMI to VGA is common but VGA to HDMI is not. buytesmart.com/adapters will make it easy to get the correct adapter. To answer your question, yes you can adapt from VGA. If your laptop has USB3.0 though, it might be better to use a Dell D3100 docking station (amzn.to/3aJRK38) and stay all digital. We avoid VGA when we can. How to choose a dual monitor KVM video details this info as well: kzitem.info/news/bejne/qJx4wJ19qZGkkn4

Yes. In this video we demonstrated using a wireless headset that was plugged into a USB hub that was connected to the KVM's USB2.0 port. The KVM will allow whichever computer that is selected to use the headset. You can also use speakers and just need to select (in your operating system) which audio output you want to use. You cannot select both audio speakers and the headset for audio since Windows will only allow you to have 1 output at a time.
