They obviously didn't show him the video on how to use it properly. Poor guy!

I wondered the same thing. They kinda made him look like a fool. But perhaps it's to make people remember the correct way to use it.

I have one of these in my car. Hopefully I’ll never be in a situation where I have to use it, but I’m glad I have it just in case.

She asked 'Would you feel comfortable with this tool in trying to get out of your car?' Keep in mind this video shows an old 1993 model (breakable tempered glass) this tool WILL NOT work on newer models with unbreakable layered laminated glass. Look for the sticker in the window's corner to see what kind of glass you have. Be Informed!

You are correct. The resqme® window breaker only works on tempered glass (side windows and some roof windows) but not on laminated (windshield).

Laminated glass has been mandated for windshields since the 1930s along with tempered side glass. Its literally a FMVSS (Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard) requirement. As long has you aren't driving a Model T or Duesenberg, you should be fine with side glass on nearly any car.

I like that he tried to operate it by hitting the window, rather than applying steady pressure. I was curious if that would work, but it seems not. I suppose there's enough resistance for it to bounce off the window before it triggers, or something. Unless you really hit it hard, but even then you might bounce off a bit before it triggers, and it might not break the window (maybe that is what was happening here). Or if it does trigger super quick, when your arm would be at more risk since it would go out the window and might get cut. Anyhoo! Seat belts get cut on an angle, not parallel. WAY harder to cut a seat belt when going directly sideways like he was trying to do. Also you want it kind of taut. With his first attempt, the belt was slack. 2nd attempt he tried to go sideways rather than on an angle. 3rd attempt it cut, but because it was still quite slack, it did a sharp angle, and was pretty rough. Turning the blade over may have helped with how he was doing it, but the blade works perfectly fine both ways, when you cut on an angle, with the belt pulled reasonable taut (which is how most people naturally do it, and if you are upside down, then it was be very taut with your body weight). Pretty awkward belt cutting here, but you can see plenty of other videos of it from other regular people. Belt cutting is no problem (and people will naturally almost always cut it on an angle, because that is what is comfortable).

You have to remember in a genuine accident you will probably be hanging upside down or your glove box smashed shut, seatbelt button hard to reach, having a tool out of reach in split seconds (like hammer etc) won't help you, I have these hanging from my keys pull ..use ...out!!!

Will this work from the outside in if you have to save someone in a fire? AND WHAT WORKS BETTER THE KEY CHAIN TOOL OR THE HAMMER WITH THE SEAT CUT BELT? There is the Resqme Key Chain & the Life Hammer. Do the non branded Hammer styles work as well as the Life Brand?

It will work from the outside as well, as long as the window is made out of tempered glass.

Excellent video. Always wondered about these things! Everyone should have one. Bare in mind, our EV'S can easily be fire traps due to the exit buttons are electrical, and the lithion ion batteries burn fast and intense. Also other situations such as a child left in a locked car. But these unfortunately can be used as a quick auto theft burglary tool.

Would this work on a bus or train window, what if you get stuck on public transport and cant reach the ones they have, i suspect its much thicker
@winryalicea8715

maybe you can break a part of the window enough for you to get out and others following behind you since it’s a bus i would think the glass is thicker but it could just take to hits or so like the second try which still took only 8 seconds

It really depends on what type of glass the window of the vehicle is made of. The resqme® works only on tempered glass windows, not on laminated.

It's not "tint" that holds the glass together. Car glass is a safety glass so even if there was no tint (which most have now anyway), it should shatter like this. This feature has been around for decades.

I saw one of these used at a vehicle extrication training session with the fire department, along with the center punch ones you’d find at hardware stores they work *really* well. I think I’m going to go with the resqme though due to the fact carrying a center punch is like carrying a small sharp ice pick around :P plus seatbelt cutter built in is a nice bonus for such a small tool. And honestly it looked like the resqme worked better

If you are in an accident, and maybe the car has flipped or you are hurt, or your seatbelt is jammed, how exactly are going to to get to a hammer somewhere in your car? This tool allows you to cut the seatbelt and break the window easily and it can hang on your keychain or be in your pocket etc. It's much more practical.
