I timed my cam by exhaust cam lined up with head then counted 29 pins to set intake cam which the dot it above the head surface.everywhere I looked it was different. The 2007 manual says to do it the way I did.still was a pain!

Good video man, if you sharpe the chain and the cams you won’t have to fiddle with the time so much when you put the cams back in. Just a thought I had might help you in the future.

If you do it that way you need to make sure the chain stays taught as you remove, and after you remove the cams. It is possible it can skip a tooth down behind the flywheel if you’re not careful

I have a Kx450f and when I turn it on it produces gray smoke, what is the problem?
@motobevy7850

If it's blue smoke it's burning oil, if it's white smoke or I suppose could look gray it is burning coolant/water. Does it smoke the entire time it's running or just on startup? Could be a head gasket

I used the feeler gauge on my exhaust side and both left and right are .009 what size shim would I need for them to be back in spec

Follow the formula I outlined in the video. You need to know first what size shims are installed on the bike currently also.

Is this a common issue I asked because I'm looking to buy a bike today and he said it has been re shimmed and inwas wondering if that is something to worry about or not
@turdpike

Over time they need to be shimmed, that’s just the nature of the beast. Nothing to worry about until the clearances get too tight or too loose

When you are checking clearances is the valve spring and bucket moving downwards when getting the feeler gauge in?
@turdpike

It shouldn’t no, that would skew your numbers. But that would require a lot of force, so it’s not very likely with thin feeler gauges unless you’re Hurcules

I have a 2016 KX450F and I know im nervous and over thinking these feeler guages but you keep loosing me going back and forth LOL I could really use a few minutes of your expertise and ill PayPal you anything you want for your time if that's what it takes. I've got 5 sets of feeler guages and 2 different calipers sitting here and haven't gotten past top dead center LOL any help would be awesome man.

Don’t over think it man, it’s all really easy. You got it at top dead centre, now you just gotta feel around to see what fits. Trial and error, you’ll get a feel for it. See what fits, and keep getting bigger until it doesn’t. Let me know if you need anything else!

@@turdpike yeah I can get that far and then the math is where I go completely blank and I don't get it I'm good with math and have done more intensive repairs but I for some reason can't wrap my head around it. I bought a hot cams shim kit I've got the service manual and I'm stumped
@turdpike

No worries, the manual will state a range of clearance it’s supposed to be. For ease lets say something big like 5-6mm. You use your feeler gauges and measure a gap of 4mm. That means the clearance is tighter than spec, correct? So, you then put in a shim that is 1mm thinner than the one currently in there, thus it should bring the clearance up to 5mm. That help at all?
