@@meghanf1267 My grandparents on my mom's side came to the US from Mexico, and I've had to fight a few people who disrespected my grandma in front of me. Some would say that we don't look Mexican ( My heritage is more Spaniard than Native, and being half French as well didn't help at all). Though my grandma could be quite racist herself. We went to a restaurant one time, and she looked at this black family then turned back to my family and said "Oye! El N****s" I was like "Grandma, what the fuck?!?" I laughed a little not because it was racist, but just by how caught off guard I was when that came out of her mouth.😂 I learned that day that a lot of Mexicans don't like black people. Mexico might be up there with the US when it comes to racism. I'm only guessing that's just Mexico, because I haven't watched a lot of other Latin American shows. 🤷🏻

I definitely relate to this, as my parents were first gen immigrants. From a very young age I could tell when my mom was having trouble communicating with people and was being disrespected for no apparent reason. So many times, customer service would tell her that they were putting her in hold and then just hang up. It’s so heartbreaking and the fact that I couldn’t really do anything about it at that age always frustrated me.

Racism= Prejudice, discrimination, or antagonism directed against a person or people on the basis of their membership in a particular racial or ethnic group, typically one that is a minority or marginalized. Discriminating by treating someone differently or poorly because someone or a minority has a foreign accent that belongs to their ethnic group. Sounds like racism to me. Of course not everyone who genuinly can't understand an accent is considered racist. She's not even talking about those people in this context. The tone, nuance, facial expression, the way people respond all matters in determining if something is microaggression. If someone is looking down on someone or belittling someone even subtly because of their foreign accent, its racism. Whether her mom felt or experienced that with the way the worker interacted with her is not for you to judge. It's not your experience.

Not being able to understand someone because of their accent ≠ making someone feel degraded for having an accent. Have you not seen videos of white people telling different races to go back to their country or repeat ' I can't understand you' just to belittle them? Yeah they exist and people actually experience stuff like this in real life if you didn't know that by now. How do you know if there wasn't any subtle degredation by the worker by the way she responded? Not understanding someone is one thing. Not even trying to understand or looking down on someone is another thing. And these things are shown through nuance, which is pretty obvious to someone experiencing racism alot of the times. But common response when subtle racism is called out is 'I didn't mean it like that. You're overeacting/delusional'. And another example is 'oh so now Im considered racist if I do something that's completely not racist?'. Idk how you managed to listen to this story and make it about yourself dude.. your judgement is so rigid. Of course she's not talking about people asking nicely to repeat because they genuinely can't understand.
