And when you can't even do that job anymore, because you are just too old and broken, come join our tribe of The Invisible. We got plenty of room. And we can always see each other.

"Remember, when they look right through you, you're still there." Love that his poetry stands up for the forgotten voices. It's always fresh listening to what Guante has to say, and he says it in such a relatable way.

Exactly! That relating style has made him my favourite poet. Wish I saw this earlier

"Remember when they look straight through you, your still there" I never realized how much I needed to hear that. Through all the pity I get, all the looks I get, I never realized how much I needed to remind myself that I'm still here.

Retail and service jobs are the most underrated prison. They feel endless sometimes and the idea of moving forward feels so impossible. Thanks for preaching this.

arec arec sorry I know that this is late but white noise is like background noise. We’re (cashiers/cart pushers/janitors) are background noise speaking background words (to others) and listening to background noise. Because we’re forgotten-no one talks to us. No one sees us-that’s what the poem is about. They don’t see us but we’re still here. Our native language is white noise, but our words (like Guante’s), still have meaning. Idk if that makes sense?

The person who makes coffee for me and know just how I like it and asks me how my day is matters to me a lot. The checker who looks at my groceries and asks me what I am going to make for dinner can make my afternoon. The guy at the drive through who always said, "Hello beautiful, what would you like today" made me swoon every single time. You folks all make my day just a little bit brighter.

It’s been 4 years since I found poetry, yet the only one I keep coming back to is this one, no matter how much I like others, this is the one that keeps me living, I can’t express how much this helps me

I love this! I've worked so many horrible retail jobs. It's honestly the biggest motivator to finish school. The last one I worked at only gave us two 15 minute breaks for an eight hour shift. Retail work really is soul crushing, and that's hardly an exaggeration.

This is probably the thing I listen to the most, more than music sometimes. I don't push carts and for a minute I was even the MOD. But man, they look right through you. And I'm half way to half way done with my shift.

I work currently as a construction labourer. I've done retail before and worked in the dish pit. Having those past jobs made me respect the people in those positions more than the guy who owns the company in working for.

When you look back at copied test, A grade you didn't earn, feel the glares of a thousand suns cause for once instead of a jacket your wearing sunscreen, you picked an old rainbow swim suit cause you use to love rainbows, you use to love rainbows so much and you thought if you thought you could think back then it'd make the time enjoyable, You regret not bringing gloves cause for no reason in particular your hands are cold, they freeze in the hot moist air, they freeze while everything is there, at the tip of your voice the sound of your terror, The sound of the fallen, and the first person you meet that cared You regret not putting the towel over your shoulders sooner so they can't see the white Mark's on your arm, but they immediately assume your a freak, the Mark's representative years of pain cut in one swift motion as you had bleed out feeling as though you could feel but like a drug its addicting you needed to realise everything. Every Asshole who called you selfish, every toxic friend who you trusted, every mistake you made that you were never blamed for but always felt it was your fault. Those Mark's are nothing to be afraid of, They are Mark's of someone who made it, Someone who despite everything is still standing, And anyone who looks at you in disgust, Is exactly where you started.
