Gold springs are a different spring rate than the black ones. Ultima is lighter in the front so lighter springs. Optima is heavier so gold all around. Buy the optional spring set and you can change them if you don't care about the spring rate.

Came out great, as you say such an icon. Kyosho driving figures always made me laugh, they didn't really care much for them - Kyosho were more about performance (function over form) 🙃

Pretty sweet looking build, totally was thinking that I couldn't live with the mismatched spring colours lol I do think my preference would be for the lower wing position, in part because from the side the wing mounts look very bulky being solid panels.

G'day Glenn your concerns about the wing hight I recon you have nailed it. IT was set low just for looks completely useless. Were you have your wing set it will make a difference help give some down force straight line stability try doing some runs with a wing and with out you will see a difference in lap times. Great video Glenn as all ways 👍

Car looks awesome, but Ultimas always do. My all time favourite chassis. I really should finish mine off. On my re-re I just have to do the body and decals, on my OG one I have to figure out a way of masking off an already cut out body with stickers on it (it's clear). Still haven't figure out how. The first Ultima I owned would have been in 88. Bought it off a mate. The body was a day glo pink. I'd only driven Tamiya buggies up to that point. The Ultima was just so much better. It got nicked out of my back shed....still miss it.

I had one many years ago the original too (with black springs all round lol) l drove it a few times down the beach and it was epic! If a little light it needed a bit of weight but thats because of modern electrics so the suspension was not as smooth as it probably would of been? Probably just me not having the right oil lol but they probably set the shocks different on the rere? Maybe explains the gold springs??? I have one still picture of my Ultima on my FB acount but never got any action shots regrettably and yes what a plum! I sold it back then to get something else! Back to yours Glenn, stunning mate absolutely stunning! I need to use white and orange more too it really goes well. Cracking video my friend really enjoyed that one and a treat getting a look at your display cabinets in that vid! Lots of fantastic cars to see! Cheers James.

I do agree the wing should be a bit lower and maybe with some #5 decals on the wing plates. I wonder if there was a packing / parts issue with gold springs in place of black. Very odd!

I'm looking at an old 1988 Tower Hobbies magazine, and the Turbo Ultima has the black front and gold rear springs. I wonder if they planned to dovetail those springs for a Turbo release to save money on having two separate part numbers.

Hi Glenn , Nice build, The Ultima is a great build and a lovely car to run. My three vintage Ultima’s are always getting run the handle really well and are pretty tuff for 35 year old cars. The gold rear springs on the RERE are the Kyosho hard spring, this is due to rear weight bias of the car. There are three spring rate for the RERE cars gold hard, black medium and silver soft. It was the same back in the day with the option house shocks.

I was always a 4WD Buggy guy, but the Ultima always impressed me with its high stance in the Kyosho catalog. This kinda fascinated me ever since. I have a rere kit waiting to be build, but I'm just not so quick with my builds, but it will be different than boxart, that's for sure. It's intresting to see your build especially the point about the wing height and springs. But as other already mentioned,it's because of the different spring rate.

I noticed the gold springs myself on the rear of mine one, and I also was wondering why kyosho did that. I refused to use them. so I bought a set of Hsp buggy shocks black springs there a lot stiffer and looks way better. Also those gold springs I found to be too weak, once you start adding the weight to it like the motor and the battery, can’t really hold the weight. Even if you shift the spacers it’s still weak. The hsp springs are dirt cheap and they perform better. I usually use them for most of my Tamiya RC’s because most of the stock springs that come with the KITTs are just too soft regardless.

The spring color indicates the spring rate. But I agree, from an aesthetic point of view, this does not look good. I believe you need Kyosho OTW124 if you want to switch to a black one.

Hi Glenn, I have one of these cars and I also have the Scorpion too. On my Scorpion I have top loading shocks. On my Ultima I used the included bottom loading shocks. If you want to keep to keep your Ultima original the bottom loading shocks are okay. I did get mine to work. However, if you want your Ultima to work better, get some top loading shocks from Kyosho. Thoughts?
