We were all in the fifth grade that summer. Fort Campbell Army Base pool. There was a jukebox there. Somebody kept pumping quarters into it. Nat King Cole Lazy Hazy Crazy Days of Summer and this song. What great memories.

My dad was military and we spent my childhood in Japan, Alabama and Texas. Those summer days in the mid-late 1960s and into the 1970s were magical. Living in military bases was a great experience for me and my friends. The pool, library, lake(pond), bowling alley and riding our bikes everywhere we could.

My favorite song as a child. I had a beautiful Japanese music box that played this. Then when I heard Kyu sing it it became my favorite song. I learned it I had to sing along. But after his airplane crash the lyrics became prophetic. Sad RIP KYU thank you for teaching me a song in Japanese. 🌹

My uncle Tom was stationed around Japan in the 60's ...he was on the Ticonderoga and took his leave on the island where Tokyo is. He learned this song in both English and Japanese and sang it as part of his repertoire ...he was a "Piano Man" who sang in clubs and on wealthy people's boats etc. around San Diego where he retired. When Uncle Tom came home one Christmas he brought my cousins porcelain Japanese baby dolls in Kimonos ...I got a music box that played this tune too! There is a portrait of my mother with the sweetest expression with her head slightly tilted painted by a talented Japanese artist that Uncle Tom commissioned that I still cherish. Sweet memories from the 60's

No idea why but his is the only ' celebrity ' death that upset me so much that it actually hurt. The pain was physical. And reading the report on the crash/ his last few minutes made me turn my back on the modern world. O.T.T.? Hmm. Maybe. But I am comfortable with the choices I have made in this small life I have been given to live.

That flight was terror from beginning to end. The worse Japanese Air disaster. I saw a program in the History channel. 50 mins of sheer panic. Poor people. On top of it, loosing him was so sad too. My admiration for ever. Know the song by heart.❤

He was also the first Japanese artist to have a number one single on the Australian singles chart. Sakamoto died on 12 August 1985 in the crash of Japan Air Lines Flight 123, along with 519 others on board the flight, making him a casualty of the deadliest single-aircraft accident in aviation history. RIP.
