The youngsters from The Greeners Youth Club ( / thegreeners.project ) visited the lemon terrace farmers of the Amalfi Coast, discovering the challenges of a landscape that is as beautiful as it is delicate and endangered. Their video interview is part of an international project within the Erasmus+ program, involving young people from various communities in Spain, Germany, Greece, and Martinique. The association ACARBIO promoted this project in Italy, in the territory of the Amalfi Coast, with the aim of engaging young people in environmental issues and encouraging them to play an active role.
Their first step was to engage in a series of video interviews on the most relevant topics of the territory. The journey through the discovery of the terraced system of the Amalfi Coast started with Michele Ruocco, the guardian of the Lemon Path that connects Maiori to Minori and a long-time advocate for the protection of the landscape and traditional lemon cultivation. Along the way, they collected testimonies from other farmers who have dedicated their lives to caring for the terraces, such as Luigi Ruocco, who now shares his concern about the continuous abandonment of the gardens. Claudio Bruno is among the other farmers who still dedicate their time to caring for the lemon groves, as well as Salvatore Giordano, who continues to use the traditional method of building dry stone walls, the backbone of the terrace system.
With this video, Mariam Barbaro, Francesco Bruno, and Adelmo Della Pietra sought to bring visibility to the current situation of the terraces of the Amalfi Coast and send a message to local institutions about the importance of placing the landscape at the center of conservation policies.
