Leo Brouwer (1939 - ):
Suite no. 2
I. Preludio
II. Allegro Burlesco
III. Andantino (un poco lento)
This piece of Leo Brouwer's displays a slightly more delicate side of his compositions. The style reflects more impressionistic, intimate ideas that he absorbed by studying scores of composers like Ravel in the music stores of Havana. It turns the traditional suite form on its head: instead of fast-slow-fast, these movements are slow-fast-slow. The undulating figure in the first movement brings about colorful changes in harmony; the second movement is like a burlesque dance, playful and snappy; the third movement is a gentle conclusion, recalling material from the first movement. This simple work shows different sides of Brouwer's compositional profile, bringing together various styles from which he took influence to create something special.
This piece was performed in recital on April 28th, 2018 in Jessen Auditorium at the University of Texas at Austin. Audio recorded by the Butler School of Music Recording Studio; Video recorded by Dale Cannedy-Azim; Production by Fred Springer. Guitar by Martin Blackwell.
