I wish I had found WORDS THAT HURT WORDS THAT HEAL when it was first published, and I am grateful to the harp therapist friend who recently brought it to my attention. It is a significant influence which may help me improve or even salvage aspects of my experience that I view with regret, and help me be ready with more words that heal and encourage. I recommend an old poem by David Bates with the title SPEAK GENTLY.

I never impute negative or nefarious motives to people I disagree with either politically or religiously. My goal is to find the truth and no side has a monopoly on the truth. I have changed my political position on some matters because their opinion seemed to me to be better than my original position. I have also gotten some important wisdom from a female rabbi which is something rare for an Orthodox Jew to admit. Most people seek truth and want the best for themselves, their family, their "group" and I find that most of the disagreements are not about the goals but only about how to get there. So, since I do not fear or disrespect those I disagree with, I can hear their ideas and either adopt them as my own when they are better than mine or just agree to disagree and then go out for coffee and brag to each other about our wonderful grandchildren.
