On 15 March at 6pm, the British School at Rome presented "L’industria edilizia a Roma nel ‘buio’ secolo X: nuovi appunti su tecniche murarie, organizzazione del cantiere e strutture amministrative " a lecture by Hendrik Dey from the City University of New York, and chaired by María Ángeles Utrero from the Escuela Española de Historia y Arqueología en Roma.
The tenth century has traditionally been viewed as the darkest of the early medieval “dark ages” at Rome. In archaeological and above all topographical terms, it remains the most poorly documented phase of the Roman Middle Ages.
This lecture focused on the building techniques of the Roman Middle Ages, which can provide new insights into the organisation of construction and - possibly - even into the social, economic and political-administrative horizons of the Romans who animated the cityscape in the tenth century.
The lecture is in Italian.
