Sisi begins first presidential visit to China
President Abdel Fatah al-Sisi began his first presidential visit to China Monday, “marking excellent relations between the two countries,” according to a statement released Sunday by the presidency.
“This visit will usher in a new phase of relations between the two countries, as China has expressed an interest in promoting their relationship to the level of ‘strategic partnership’-a level China maintains with only a limited number of countries globally,” presidential spokesperson Alaa Youssef said in the statement.
Sisi was invited to make the trip by Chinese Politburo member Meng Jianzhu, the secretary of the Central Politics and Law Commission of the Communist Party, during a meeting held Nov. 22 in Cairo.
Youssef stated that Sisi will meet Chinese President Xi Jinping at the Great Hall of the People in Beijing, where an official reception ceremony will be held, followed by talks between the presidents.
During the visit, a number of other agreements will be signed to promote cooperation in different areas, including economic cooperation, transportation, medical equipment, civil aviation, education and environment.
Furthermore, Sisi will hold talks with an array of senior Chinese officials, including Prime Minister Li Keqiang, China’s National People’s Congress Chairman Zhang Dejiang, Chinese Minister of Commerce Gao Hucheng and Chinese Minister of the International Department of the Chinese Communist Party Central Committee Wang Jiarui.
The president will also meet with a number of heads of major Chinese tourism companies to promote leisure travel to Egypt. China is currently the world’s largest export market for tourism, with the number of Chinese tourists reaching 130 million people annually, according to the presidential statement.
Sisi additionally will visit the city of Chengdu, one of China’s main industrial hubs, to tour factories and plants specializing in energy and technology.
Youssef highlighted the fact China is already a significant economic partner with Egypt, and is Egypt’s second largest trading partner globally. Trade between Egypt and China amounted to $10.3 billion in 2013, of which $1.9 billion were Egyptian exports to China and $8.4 billion were imports from China, according to government figures.
The history of modern bilateral relations between the two countries dates back to 1956, when Egypt became the first Arab and African country to recognize the communist government of the People’s Republic of China.
