You explain the differences very well. I'm 57 and just getting back into fishing after a good 20+ year vacation! I found out quick that ALL of my gear was way outdated. Picked up a nice Lew's baitcaster reel for a great price. Then looked around and found the matching rod for a song and dance, loaded it with a good braided line and I'm figuring it out. This video was very informative to me. Thanks and I'll be looking for a few more videos from you.

Thank you for sharing your valuable experience and knowledge. My lake is in West Milford NJ so I know what you say has particular relevance to my fishery. Got my first fish (pickerel) on the shellcracker yesterday. Not the target fish, but what a confidence booster for a bait I have had for years and have never given a fair amount of time. My 8 ft Dobyns fury loads this bait beautifully. I also mainly fish braid to leader. But after the points you made, so eloquently, I will be switching from floro and trying mono. Visibility in my lake is hardly ever more than two feet anyway.

i really like the idea of a big cranking rod for the smaller treble hook baits! i’ve been fishing the bullshad this spring on my 13 muse black SB rod and kept losing fish on it and i knew it was because it was too fast of a rod for those trebles. do you think a larger cranking rod could handle something as heavy as a 7” bullshad tho? or do you think should look into an actual SB rod with more of a softer action to it?
@KeepinItReelFishing
4 жыл бұрын
I have the Bullshad 4x4, which I use on that same Falcon rod, but yes....you would be wise to put the 7" model on something beefier, yet still very parabolic. On the higher end of things the LDC (Low Down Customs) 'White Labal' MH is rated from 1-5oz and gets rave reviews. It is a slow taper....you heard that right. Not a moderate, or moderate/fast, but a actual slow taper. Meaning it loads DEEP not only to help in casting, but also keeping fish pinned. I have the LDC White Label in the XH and it has been a revelation. On the more economical side of things I'll recommend a rod I have no one talks about that is awesome for baits in the size range you mention. From Okuma its called the SST (Salmon Steelhead and Trout). Don't get fixated on the name, its a swimbait rod through and through. Moderate/fast taper as per Okuma but I feel it is softer and a moderate. Heavy power, 1-6oz rating. While the Falcon mentioned in this video is my go to for all treble hook baits up to around 2.5oz, the Okuma also does a fine job for those 2oz baits, but you can also use baits up to 6oz (3-4oz is where the rod wants to be though). The part number is: SST-C-791H

Thats Matt's "Coppernose" color....its sweet. That one happens to be a slow sink. The following is my response to a similar question from someone on Swimbait Universe: "Get a floater and a slow sink. The floater for the simple fact that when a topwater bite is on, you have the tool. Also, I'm a firm believer in the bigger fish 'pinning' their prey philosophy. Just like giants 'pinning' Hudds to the bottom, putting a good size bluegill on top, eliminating a dimension of escape (I believe) lends itself to more trophy size bites. Also, you can add larger hooks, larger split rings, or suspend strips and turn the floater into the heavy float, or even a super slow sink if you combine a few of those mods. Second, get a slow sink. The slow sink is heavy enough such that you can't make a floater into one without STACKING a ton of weight on it, which isn't practical. That, and the fact that you can count down a slow sink to a desired depth and work it there. Between a floater and a slow sink you are covered."

Agree with your sentiment on the rod. I fish them on a Fury 795 and while they're "fast" is really more of a mod-fast and good for treble hooks, it does feel like a bit more rod than I'd ideally like for this bait. How do you feel that rod is for smaller crankbaits? I've been in the market for a cranking rod for a while now and might pull the trigger in the spring.
@KeepinItReelFishing

How small? The weight rating is true. It needs at least 3/4oz to load up and cast well. But, for at that point...3/4 and up and particularly if your using something like a large lipless crank (something streamlined)....holy crap, they LAUNCH!

I still use nylon monofilament for everything. I tried braid but I really don't like a line with no stretch. I've been fishing for bass for almost 20 years now and I've never had a bass break my line. I never caught a really giant bass but I caught a few over 4lbs. And I've used 6lb nylon (I say nylon and not mono because fluoro is a monofilament line too) for a few years and even landed my PB (5lbs) on a regular spinnerbait fished on 6lb nylon. No bass ever broke my line. Never! I'm using 20lb Trilene Big Game for my swimbaits, but I'm thinking about downsizing to 15lb or even 12lb line. I think I have more bites on lighter line and I fished 1 to 3oz swimbaits on 12lb line and had no breaks while casting and as I said before, no fish broke my line... Also, I don't trust connection knots. One day I lost a fish because my connection knot (blood knot) slipped on the hook set. I also fish in the sea, from time to time and I have to use a leader and I use the blood knot and that knot slipped a few times (and I always inspect the knot to see if it was well tied and I pull a bit on both lines to test it). I really don't like that. I like my system as simple as possible and I don't want to add any more weak spots to it. So, I use straight nylon and I've always used stiffer rods to compensate for the line stretch. I think I have a very good hookup ratio and I very rarely lose a fish. I've only lost maybe 2 fish that I think might have been close to my PB, but I really doubt they were my PB... So, I'll keep using straight nylon because that's the only line that really works for me and I have confidence in (I even use it for frog fishing).

I tried the braid to leader, but I think I bkew out two rod tips doing this. What knot do you use? Do you have any other tricks to make the knot smoother?
@KeepinItReelFishing
4 жыл бұрын
I should have spoke about this in the video. I have used the Alberto knot exclusively. I started using it simply due to the fact that it is dead easy to tie / remember vs the F.G. knot and others. In 7 years of using it I can only remember two instances ever of the knot breaking. One was when I was yanking on it when I was snagged and the other was on a mid-cast lock up (backlash). In both cases I think I probably didn't tie the knot perfect, because over those 7 years were hundreds of other snags and backlashes where the knot did not fail. I full, 100%, without question trust it. It works on the principle of a "Chinese finger trap", and because of which it actually can't slip....it only gets tighter the more pressure is applied to it.

Another aspect of the issue of blowing out guides is guide size and quality. Leaders and smaller than average guides don't mix. Leaders and poor quality guides don't mix. You need to have higher quality guides that are a larger diameter in order to use leaders without popping inserts.

@John-nd7il
4 жыл бұрын
Greg Heckert bout if you tie it will. Also you can melt the tail ends carefully so they don't stick out. The leader is less visable and absorbs some sock. Best of both worlds. Also you're leader is usually a lighter line so if you get snagged it will break there instead of the middle of your main line so you just tie on another leader instead of losing several years or almost all your line

The reel is fine.....just about any reel is. The rod is not ideal because its a medium heavy and you have to compress those little Huddgills for a good hookset. The new 'top hook' Huddgills have a hook that is riiiiiight there ready to pop vs the original ones who's hook was more recessed. I mention this because the new design means you can probably do pretty well in terms of hook up ratio with your rod if you. A: Swing HARD. B: Use braid to a leader. Having said that in the future, if you continue to throw larger baits, I would pick up a dedicated heavy action rod rated to at least 2oz.

Thats an EXCELLENT question Jake and one of the things I wondered too. I would encourage you to try both and see what you think, but my experience was pretty clear. You can feel a hell of a lot of stretch using all mono even with a stiff rod. No doubt it helps, and listen.....you'd probably do just fine. But, when you set the hook with braid (to a leader), even with the parabolic rod, it "hits" harder. You can just feel that shockwave transferring to the fish.
@John-nd7il

Absolutely Omar. But, 'work' is a relative word. A fast action rod is inherently not a friend to treble hook lures. You will certainly catch a good percentage of the fish that strike. How heavy is the braid you're using? 65-80# is where you really want to be to handle the shock of a backlash, and the heavier braid is less likely to dig in on itself and give you that "full stop" backlash that breaks your braid in the first place.

@@helotaxi 40lb. Definitely gonna try heavier braid next time. Wish there were more heavy power moderate action swimbait rods on the market since most swimbait rods are too stiff for my taste.

@@FishingforReel Most swimbait rods are designed with a jig hook style swimbait in mind or a hard bait with big, heavy duty trebles. You can lean on those pretty hard without really worrying about straightening a hook or ripping one loose, and with those heavy baits, once you're hooked up, you really want to just get to reeling on them and never let them have their head. A true swimbait rod has to be pretty stout to handle the heavy baits that they're designed for, but when you really lean on them with a big fish, they load a lot deeper than you think they will. I've got several swimbait rods, as well, that say they are a "fast" taper, but understand that taper is relative. "Fast" on a swimbait rod is usually closer to a mod-fast on something like a jig rod and a mod-fast swimbait rod tends to be more like a moderate normal rod. They seem stiff, because, well, they are. They would be a heavy to an XXX-heavy power in a normal rod, but remember, it's all relative. A medium power swimbait rod is "medium" relative to other swimbait rods not relative to all rods. Same with actions. The action describes how far into the blank the rod loads and as a general rule, swimbait rods load deeper than jig worm rods.

YOU KNOW you wanted that thumbnail to show a Ryoga instead...keeps the ''skinny'' forearm desease away! For my ''massive'' success, the rods the least important. I could use that lure to bust speckled trout and redfish. Even really dumb saltwater anglers have no net, WHAT? a Ugly stik Striper rod is parabolic! See old Ugly Stik logo, haha... a falcon??

What size braid and leader are you using on that setup?

50lb braid to 15lb mono. You can go anywhere from 40lb braid to 65lb braid. The weight rating there doesn't matter....its all about the thickness. 40lb tends to be too think (8lb mono equivalent) and digs easily on baitcast reels. As far as the mono, anywhere from 15lb in pretty open water or light cover, all the way up to 20lb in heavier cover. If you want to play safe there is nothing wrong with going 65lb braid to 20 mono. Only downside is it won't dive as deep or as easily as on the lighter/thinner lines.
