@@EmelieWaldken Yesterday I went to the session in Ester. Looking for a fellow who asked for a recording of us doing Katushka. A Ukrainian wedding dance. The first stop I didn’t find him but some folks playing tunes and song. A friend was taking a brake so I borrowed her fiddle. It been a couple years since I picked up a fiddle. I was really screechy for the first couple tunes. Finally was able to at least be more or less OK. I miss having a cello. Really nice having folks like you so I can listen to lovely tunes.

It is impossible that when you play an instrument it sounds bad. It's fantastic what you've done, bringing an instrument back to life. Congratulations on the result. I would have put a fine adjuster for more comfort for tuning.

Thank you very much ! I have a fine tuner on the E string but I could have put another one on the A, true (D and G I'm used to tune with the pegs, also on my regular fiddle). The hardest to tune though are the resonance strings - and these can't get fine tuners with this design of the tailpiece.
@YouPeasant888

@@EmelieWaldken Then Wittner geared tuning pegs may be an alternative. Pro: very easy and effortless fine tuning once you understand how it works. Cons: 80€ (for a 4-set), you clearly see that they are made of plastic, and they are a bit "chubby".

@@YouPeasant888 Yeahhh all the ones I've seen (both in person and on pictures) are so ugly, I just can't. On my regular violin I'm very happy with my two fine-tuners for A and E and the pegs for D and G. But here the resonance strings make it more delicate...

I admire you for your patience and care while crafting! And this low unusual tuning sounds very warm and pleasant. I already have your CD version of this tune present in my memory, so I can hear and appreciate all the differences. My ear is not trained enough, but the resonance strings sound to be tuned A and C#?

Thank you so much for the compliments. The resonance strings are tuned A and C#. And yes I really like this soft, velvet-y and kinda dark sound of the instrument - yet bright because of the resonance !

Are the sympathetic strings the same used as in the hardanger fiddle?
@EmelieWaldken

No, these are viola d'amore strings. The hardanger fiddle being shorter, I was unsure they would fit on a regular violin's body. Also they're so much harder to find, whereas viola d'amore strings can be purchased on Thomann and the like.

Turning a dead instrument in a live and playable one, although of a different kind: shouldn't we call this "Tod und Verklärung"? Isn't it sort of an alchemic process? I think so, and Beauty and Love are the philosopher's stones. But you do want to know about the sound "in a clear, high quality recording"... a dark-red-velvety-womb sound (ok, perhaps the recording is not so clear, but it's a synaesthetic one :-) )

Good job! I recommend making a tailpiece with fine tuners one day (you may have seen Anders Norudde showing me how it is done on the Facebook page). Also I have some pictures on instagram.com/joelstewartinstruments A tailpiece like that can transform how useable the instrument is, even mine that already have planetary geared pegs are much easier to tune this way.
