I just finished the book and am an emotional wreck! I assumed I'd like this book a lot less than the trilogy (which is my favorite book series ever) because my favorite literary protagonist is only a baby and wouldn't add much. Boy was I glad to be wrong! Malcolm is such a tremendous character and I quickly came around on Alice once the story really got going. Mary Malone is my favorite secondary character from the trilogy and immediately thought Hannah Ralph was going to be a carbon copy of Mary, but again, happy as heck to have been mistaken! I'll tell you what, Malcolm and Alice give Lyra and Will a run for their money when it comes to a duo heading out on an adventure! I am so in love with this series!!

So I decided to jump straight back into the original trillogy after reading this one... And did anyone else spot the instant reference? I read in an interview that it would follow characters who would come into lyras life later, Hannah Reif being the one I had totally missed. Not only is she one of the ladies at the first dinner Lyra meets Mrs Coulter, she is also the head of the college where lyra is learning to read the alethometre in lyras oxford. It says a lot about the new book, that i got the same sense of excitement off meeting Hannah again in Northern Lights, as I did meeting Lyra in Book of Dust... Its been well over a week and I'm still trying to straighten my head about just how amazing this was... To step back into that world, to be engulfed in Lyras Oxford once again... It felt like coming home and meeting old friends, and the new ones I fell just as in love with just as quick... 5* any day

It feels so good to be back in Pillip Pullman universe! I totally agree with you guys: the vilain in the book is sooo vile ! I felt sick reading what he did to his daemon... Anyway, I just finished La belle sauvage and I really loved it. Malcom is an amazing 11year old ! Hope you enjoyed your evening at the Bodleian ! 😊

I first read the "His Dark Materials" trilogy - in a one volume edition - last year, and was bowled over as I have been only once before by any books. Almost immediately pre-ordered "La Belle Sauvage". I started reading it as soon as it arrived, and was so impressed that I turned back to the beginning and read it again. Now, I'm reading the HDM trilogy again, and enjoying it even more. I can't wait for the second book to be published in October.

Greetings from Nova Scotia, Canada. When you mentioned about flooding you reminded me of a plan that I've put out there a few years ago that amounts to a "Unified Field Theory of Modern World Problems" that I would like to see initiated from London, England partly due to your being empathetic toward the threat of rising ocean levels. Actually..... I have a couple or three books in my head and I was hoping you might be able to assist me to find a co-author?

I just finished reading it this afternoon and my thoughts are on my channel. I, too, was really distressed at the villain. He was probably the scariest villain I've ever encountered in a book! It was definitely a good book for Halloween. I loved every minute of it.

Having finished the book, I'm curious about Malcolm's relation with Alice. How will she and Hanna Relf get along? I'm wondering if Alice had been molested prior to meeting Malcolm and that may have been part of why she was so hostile to him at first.

Yes, of course that's the reason for her feirceness. She was so strict with Lyra growing up. Gave her no affection as a baby and small child. She has wounds. And when she did marry her husband died. She was so vulnerable herself to the advances of a self hating con man.

You must be very sheltered if you need trigger warnings for book characters.

Uh, no? You don't want to set off panic/PTSD attacks for readers who don't know that sort of thing will come up, or when. ~ 50 Shades, it's obvious, and that still got trigger warnings in Dominic Noble's videos. This one, it's HINTED about the dude a few times. You might even skim over the moments, and suddenly that scene happens. Not in detail, but it's fairly obvious. It's a stressful scene, that one. ~ Also counts for those who got caught in floods, because they aren't gentle little things, they can be horrific and rapid. And it's also been a recent chaos here in the last year, I don't even know when that flood ended, updates just stopped. ~ Oh and of course the animal abuse. Anything that happens to the Daemons hurts deeply, even if they're evil to begin with. ~ It's still consumable media, not much different from games and TV, why do they deserve trigger warnings when books don't? PTSD doesn't care.

Agree with original post. This is not a book or a book trilogy or a world for "trigger warnings." There are no safe spaces in the Pullmanverse, either. If PTSD doesn't care about trigger warnings, neither does the real world. I personally don't think it's a good idea to breed a society where people are so mentally and emotionally crippled they can't even read books and consume media without warning labels. That's exactly the opposite message of these stories.

Honestly i am quite disappointed in this book. It's not bad book. But you have this amazing world ( or worlds ) yet you barely use it. It's like getting companion book to Lord of the Rings. And entire book is set in Shire. With just small glimses of this amazing world. As I said It's not bad book. But for me it's truly dissapointing one. Hopefully second book will be better.

Rich 08211 Just this evening Philip Pullman was asked this question and he said that you could this book first if you want, it would just be a different reading experience. He mainly doesn't want to to tell people what to do!
