2000 Metropolitan Opera W.A.Mozart《Don Giovanni》 Don Giovanni: Bryn Terfel Zerlina: Hei-Kyung Hong Conductor: James Levine Production&Set Design: Franco Zeffirelli
Bryn is the best Don. Why he has thought trough the role and is subtle. Non of the others have this. Plus a voice of pure satin.

I LOVE this production, this cast, the staging.I don't think even Thomas Allen's dvds are this seductive (other than maybe the 1986one) ... is this on dvd somewhere? One thing- it's her ENGAGEMENT party. Here, Zeffereli the only one smart enough not to give her a veil! haha. I miss it! The 2004 was so bogus- them just sitting on steps. THIS is how it's done

She's getting married, but not to him. He decides that he wants to sleep with her, so he's trying to seduce her. (at the end she gives in). He's saying, basically, "You'll say yes to me, and we'll go over there together." She's basically saying, "I want to go, but I don't want to go, I'm afraid, I pity my fiance. But soon I won't resist any more." They say at the end, basically, "Let's go!" You can find the real lyrics through Google if you want.

Terfel does a magnificent job here. We are used to thinking of the Don as this suave, svelte, debonair seducer, but Terfel shows us a different side of the Don -- a lout who uses his wealth, power and influence as the tools of seduction (and, when those don't work, brute force as the means of his conquests). Does that strike a parallel with a certain Hollywood producer much in the news these days?

I agree with FieldHockeyGoalie007. Terfel is magnificent here and so is Hong, letting the acting enhance their marvelous singing rather than distract from it. The apple is a nice touch, especially when you consider where Don G. is headed eventually... I really like this staging, true tension rather than soft porn. Someone needed to tell Ildebrando D'arcangelo's stage director that less is more in this scene.

Bryn needs to keep his size down if he expects to play younger roles convincingly. He reminds me of Meat Loaf, for pity's sake. One reason Sam Ramey was able to play Don G, till well past 40 was he kept himself very fit and in shape, thus he always looked at least 10 years younger anyway. (The full head of hair was just dumb luck.)

Sorry, I hate him as Leporello. I just never buy his voice in any of the real bass roles like figaro or 4villains. The 'high' notes in the roles aren't high enough in his range, and he doesn't really have that bass bite. I think he's a true bass-baritone, more toward the baritone end. He can sing the Don any time, in my bed. As for appearance, it's very recent that that mattered much. He's a rock star, no matter what (and aside from the long wig I think he looks good)

@PolyhymniaLyra She does seem rather too dignified during this scene, perhaps, but her acting in the rest of this production, I think, does convey that impression rather well. Perhaps in context, her poise in this scene can be seen as affectation in the presence of a man she's self-conscious around. Still, I see your point.

@RealJusuf, I think colorblind casting is one of the great achievements in opera performance. I don't care about race or ethnicity if the performer can sing the music and hold their own on stage. Miss Hong does both admirably. Do you really wish that Leontyne Price only sang one role (Aida) do you really want Otello to be banished from the stage until a black dramatic tenor can be found?

@Artsman85 Ok, I am aware how it may sound, but I KNOW that I am not racist, I don't judge people by their skin colour, don't have anything against blacks, asians etc... The operas you mentioned are minority, but it doesn't matter, the main problem here is that you apparently misunderstood me - If you read my comment carefully, you can realise that I have nothing against blackman or any other race, I simply can't see as realistic, as I wrote before, for example a black man in a role of Norse god

a black man in a role of Siegmund or Wotan from The Ring of the Nibelung... I am not racist, chauvinist or anything similiar, but to me, Opera is something deeply connected with Europe, and that is way are noneuropeans/members of other races unfit for singing in opera, no matter their singing capabilities... Opera is not only about singing, it's about acting as well...

Keep in mind also that this is a society with no social mobility. 'Io cangero tua sorte' is like an offer to be elevated to the standard of living enjoyed by the queen of England, instead of working your fingers raw, tied to the same piece of land, for the rest of your life. Not surprising she falls for him.

@gitaclick How do you know what would M or W care about? I don't know about M, but Wagner was friend od Nietzsche and Nietzsche critisized him and ended thir friendship because of ''tide of nationalism'' he felt in Wagner's compositions... I don't know what they had in mind, because 150-250 years ago I supppose opera singers were mostly Europeans... Opera is of course connected with human kind, not with unicorns, it's human invention =) and it's genes, not God's gift, but thats another story :-P

I think the long-haired, masculine Czech dons with strong jaws and chests physically project the cruelty and virility of the role slightly better than the pudgy Welshman, but this is a matter of preference. No one would argue that Bryn isn't an amazing actor.
