Cumbre Vieja (0:00 - 0:59)
Cumbre Vieja is a large active stratovolcano that occupies the entire southern third of the island. It is made up of dozens of craters, domes and parasitic cones. It is the cause of all eruptions on the island for the last 7000 years. Between September 19 and December 13, 2021, an effusive eruption occurred that was the largest and longest-lasting within the island in the last 500 years. Fresh lava covered nearly 1,200 hectares and destroyed nearly 2,900 residential houses and other buildings.
Barranco de las Angustias, Cascada de Los Colores (1:00 - 1:45)
In the protected landscape of Barranco de Las Angustias, a trail leads along the riverbed to the Cascada de Los Colores waterfall. The approximately six-meter wall of the Rivanceras canyon is colored in tones of green, yellow and orange, over which a waterfall gushes all year round. The yellow and orange hues are due to the content of iron dissolved in the canyon waters. The water here is among the most iron-rich on the entire island of Palma. Green tones are provided by algae and mosses. Together, they create a palette of shades that changes throughout the year and depending on the strength of the waterfall's flow.
Roque de Los Muchachos, Pico de la Cruz (1:46 - 2:49)
The highest peak of La Palma is Roque de Los Muchachos, which rises to a height of 2426 meters. It is one of the best places in the world from which to observe the stars. From Roque de Los Muchachos, the ridge route leads to other peaks with wonderful views of the Caldera de Taburiente National Park.
Bosque de los Tilos, Cascada de los Tilos, Mirador de las Barandas (2:50 - 3:13)
Los Tilos is home to one of the most important laurel forests in the Canary Islands. It is an ecosystem inherited from the Tertiary, which became the first biosphere reserve on the island. There are several hiking trails, one approximately 1 km long leads to the magnificent waterfall Cascada de los Tilos, another to the viewpoint Mirador de las Barandas.
Ruta de los Volcanes (3:14 - 4:26)
An almost 25 km long route that leads through the volcanic landscape between the craters. At the time of our visit, most of the trail was closed due to the eruption of Cumbre Vieja. Therefore, the starting point was the southern tip of the island and the route led past Volcán de Teneguía to Volcán de San Antonio.
Volcán de Teneguía
The Teneguía cone was formed during an eruption in 1971. At that time, 43 million m³ of molten rock flowed onto the earth's surface, expanding the island by 2 km square and creating an impressive apocalyptic-looking landscape. It rises to a height of just over 300 meters.
Volcano de San Antonio
San Antonio erupted in 1677. It's a perfect crater, the rim of which can be walked around. There is an Information Center with interesting reviews and graphic documents. The Fuencaliente City Council understood its tourist attraction and economic potential. Access to the crater has been paid for several years now.
Salinas de Fuencaliente (4:27 - 4:31)
In the south of the island there are salt pans, many migratory birds fly here, it is one of the most visited places on the island. The contrast between the white color of the salt, the black volcanic soil and the blue sea creates an extremely beautiful picture.
Faro de Fuencaliente (4:32 - 4:44)
Fuencaliente Lighthouse is an active lighthouse at the southern end of the island of La Palma in the Canary Islands. The original lighthouse was built in 1903 and while it still exists, it was replaced by the current lighthouse in 1985. It is one of a number of lighthouses in the Canary Islands.
