La Paz Waterfall Gardens is the most visited private ecological attraction in Costa Rica. Its five waterfalls include the famous La Paz Waterfall and an animal refuge for animals that were held illegaly as pets. As they can't be released back into the wild again, they were entrusted to the La Paz wildlife refuge by the Costa Rican Wildlife Ministry. None of the animals were taken from their natural habitat.
The River La Paz forms the waterfall after traversing 8 kilometres of volcanic terrain, and then continues through the rainforest of the eastern side of Poás Volcano. A short path leads behind the waterfall, where a small shrine had been located. Upstream from the waterfall is La Paz Waterfall Gardens, a hotel and park, where visitors can observe many different species of local wildlife. The waterfall and surrounding area were severely damaged in the 6.1 magnitude earthquake of January 8, 2009. Landslides damaged the road that runs alongside the waterfall, but has since been fixed and offers a roadside stop for photos.
The Poás is a volcano that rises to 2,708 metres above sea level in the Poás Volcano National Park. Since 1989 it has increased considerably the emission of gases causing acid rain phenomena that have damaged the flora in some sectors of the Park and surrounding agricultural plantations to the area. At the top there are two craters, the principal of 1.5 km in diameter and 300 metres deep, and the Botos lagoon, a cold water lake formed purely by rain water.
Today the volcano emits large amount of gas and water vapor from the different fumaroles that are located in the inner cone of the crater. Poás Volcano and Irazú Volcano (see my previous video) are the two most visited volcanoes in Costa Rica. Both are close to San José.
