One of the best videos on the subject of compression and the two styles of 1176 and LA2A. Impressive visual and clear description of the sound and effects. Congrats to 5 stars in my book. Best to you! B.Tidelius, Sweden

Excellent. I have tried both as vsts in cakewalk, and like them. What I tend to go for mostly is the stock sonituscompresssor plugin. It is supposed to be somewhat based off of the LA2A so I've heard. I find that it has the smoothness of the LA2A, but can be dialed in to be aggressive like the 76. I'd love to hear other people's comments on this. Again, great job Mike.

another great episode Mike. I'm a 46 y.o. guitarist from Malaysia. during early lockdown, my highschool band got together and start practicing and writing music again (after like 25 year of 'hiatus' ). at that time, we knew next to nothing about anything in production/mixing and so on. i started using cubase first, and then give up. and then change to Cakewalk. and thank you, thank tou, thank you... we use to impress the kids when it come to playing instrument (we did have a long lead time on that) but now, because of this channel, we even managed to shocked them on our mix, too. These old timers are now having the highest level of enthusiasm in our music ever.... we no longer looking just for gigs, but also aiming to actually release our materials... Thanks to Creative Sauce, Cakewalk and ZOOM L-20 (and arguably to the pendemic too peerhaps). p/s we are so serious about this revival, and start buying required equipment (maybe its GAS actually but officially lets go with this line 😅), which mostly we have to hide in the studios...wifeys being wifeys after all. P/s2: i found that mixing drums (maybe vocal too but drums is worse) especially the bloody snares....

Wow, PERFECT comparison demonstration. Showing the waveform of a bass track and a vocal track seems to be the best way I can imagine to help someone “get it”. These two devices sound reeeally good, and the prices are pretty darn good for what they offer. 😎👍👍

Still on the fence about my first "analog" purchase--debating between a preamp with compressor or just a compressor (also nervous about the gear addiction lol).

Sorry - just don't like the net result. I get a bit of evening out of a more prominient vocal in the mix, but this is just like brutally normalizing it in SoundForge. I don't like it; it's flat. She's got beutiful dynamics in her singing and it'a all out of the window. Not having worked with either compressor extensively, I'd ditch the 1176 altogether on these very solid vocals, and just attenuating it a little with some 'soft & lame, slow' compression to round it up. It's just too hard, like this. Notwithstanding: great demo of the 'Warm' released of these compressors, which I imagine to be less bank-breaking. Also makes me wanna cancel my order of an 1176 stop box, for bass, and to order its less dramatic cousing instead. I've not need a compressor for several decades, as I studied bass the whole hog; but a box that just takes off some inconsisitensies (I'm only human) might no be the job for the UA 1176 stomp box, after all. Basses quickly tent to 'pump' with compression, and whilst it's a funky effect, it's not what I want one for: I'm human, most basses are inconsistent, as are most amps. So, year, the overuse (sorry to be so blunt) of the 1176 has made me rething my mail orders sequence - the 1176 is overkill!

Donner created their fully analog, non-optical, LAX COMP pedal based on the 1176 Compressor. Using a single LM3080 Transcondance amp IC, and nearly 80 other components, including 4 transistors. It does have a limiting threshold knob as well. For 35-40 bucks, go stereo with a pair for under 100 dols! This pedal deserves a demo. Literally nothing online.Having used mine, I can tell you that for guitar and it's got lots of good tone and is really well made!

I watch and read many tutorials on music production and your explanations are always so clear and understandable. The concepts I've learned from you are so useful regardless of the Daw I'm using. Thank you!

Excellent video, Mike 👍, thanks. I chuckled when I read the title, as obviously they are both great compressors but do different jobs - which you illustrated very well in your video (IMHO); I thought the audio prints really helped to show what effect they were having. It's a great track too...

I use a 2a plugin for basically everything. I love it specifically because I have relatively little control. I don't have the time consuming luxury of getting the compression "perfect." It's very freeing.

Great video! I really like your music. I learned a lot about compression here. I have the Alesis 3630 and will try to apply what I learned here particularly on my bass playing. Compression has been one of the most difficult concepts to understand; but, this video has cleared so much of that up for me. Thank You
