Labor Day is September 1st.
The holiday honors the American labor movement and the contributions of workers to the development and achievements of the country.
The first Labor Day was celebrated on September 5, 1882, in New York City, organized by the Central Labor Union.
The idea of a “workingmen’s holiday” quickly spread, and by 1885, Labor Day was being celebrated in many industrial centers across the country.
The push for a national holiday gained momentum, and by 1894, 23 states had adopted Labor Day.
On June 28, 1894, President Grover Cleveland signed a law making the first Monday in September a national holiday.
Labor Day not only celebrates the economic and social contributions of workers but also marks the end of summer for many Americans.
It’s a time for parades, picnics, and various festivities In Laguna Beach our local firemen have a pancake breakfast.
